Title: William Bugg
Post by: dotslot on Friday 06 January 12 16:07 GMT (UK)
I'm trying to research my great grandfather William Bugg born 'I think' 1839 Great Whelnethem, Suffolk. I know he joined the army as a note in a family Bible says 'Driver Wm.Bugg, E Battery 23rd Brigade Royal Artillery, Bellary(India) March 12th 1866'. He married Amelia Burley in Aldershot in 1872 and several weeks later my grandfather William John Bugg was born, again in Aldershot although a few weeks later he was Baptised in Hackney, London. Two other children were born in Kensington, London where William Bugg gives profession as Ostler. He died in 1891 in Blackwall Lane, Greenwich profession Chemical Labourer. He appears in no Census records. My grandfather also joined the army Rifle Brigade in Woolwich in 1892 but upon signing up changed his name to William John Budge. I have searched and searched for Army Records for William Bugg without success. I have a feeling he was a deserter. Can anyone help?

WO10 are the muster books for the RA. So 'The World Wide Army Index 1861' is an amateurish snapshot copy of the muster records.

You need to go to Kew and look up further RA musters from 1866 (or 1872 if he was still serving) until you find him leaving the army.

Thanks Ken. I live in Belgium so a visit to TNA is not really an option, but thanks again anyway.
