Title: Bewick Family of Earsdon
Post by: Racing Girl on Friday 06 January 12 13:47 GMT (UK)
Looking for any info regarding my Bewick line from Earsdon.  I have:

Andrew Bewick (c1720) who chr the following children in Earsdon, wife not named:

Robert 1742 - may have married Jane Ord in 1765 and chr dau Jane in 1766 in Earsdon
Jane 1744 - No info
Mary 1746 - May have married Timothy Duxfield in Earsdon in  1767
Elizabeth - born and died in 1748
Andrew - 1750.  Married Eleanor Cuthbertson in 1770 and had Jane 1770, William 1773, Andrew 1775-1776, Andrew 1778 all in Earsdon, and Eleanor 1780, Thomas 1787 and Isabella 1789 all in Wallsend.

My line goes through Andrew (1750) and his son William (1773).  William married Elizabeth Ainsley at South Shields St Hildas in 1796 and had 8 children christened there between 1797 and 1812.

Particularly looking for information on the early Bewicks, and any info on Eleanor Cuthbertson.  GR has one contact for Eleanor for the right date and location but the lady has not yet replied.  Is there anyone else researching this family?

Thanks in advance

Brenda

Oh boy!  I don't know how these replies slipped by as I usually look at the "Show new replies to your posts" link at the top of the page on each visit.  Radcliff, please accept my apologies, I don't normally blow off people who are trying to help me!  I'll have a look at the info you provided and also my tree (right now!) and I'll get back to you!

Alan - Was your Bewick family in the Earsdon area, or at least in Northumberland somewhere?

The two Andrew's of Andrew and Eleanor Bewick are definitely mine and I can confirm the baptism and death info provided.

Mary Bewick married Timothy Duxfield in Earsdon on 24 Nov 1767.  They had two children that I know of both in Earsdon, George bap 30 Oct 1768 and Jane bap 22 July 1770 (of The Waggonway House in the BT).

The Duxfield family look quite established in this Parish looking at the IGI batches and the BT's too, there are a number of other births to male Duxfields.  There is a Marjery Duxfield, dau of Timothy of West Newsham, being burried on 10 April 1764 in Earsdon according to the BT. I can't find your reference to the one buried on the same day in 1769 though.

The marriage of Timothy Duxfield and Elizabeth Maughlin took place in Earsdon on 20 June 1776, they had children baptised in Earsdon, one of which they named Margery.  I don't know if this is the same Timothy who had married Mary Bewick or buried the other Marjery Duxfield in 1764, but I haven't come across a death for Mary in the BT's yet.

One other thing I did find was the burial of a Jane Bewick, wife of Anthony of Backwith, buried 25 April 1771, hopefully this is the wife of my earliest Andrew Bewick bn c1720.

It seems that this Anthony Bewick was married at Earsdon on 18 October 1762 to Jane Crowther.  This was on the IGI, the BT's only show baptisms and burials for 1762 so there is no more info to be gleaned from there.  Is this a second marriage for my Anthony, or is it another Anthony Bewick entirely!  The only thing I seem to be coming up with for this line is more questions!

Northumberland Communities web site is a nice little site to pick up little pieces of information

Militia list Earsdon 1762
Timothy Duxfield, a farmer

List seems to be compiled by John Duxfield constable
