Title: Byrnes Cottages/Reades Road
Post by: mjb1 on Tuesday 03 January 12 10:53 GMT (UK)
Need help in pinpointing the location of 2 places.
1 = Byrnes Cottages Clonskeagh,
2 = Reades Road Ranelagh.

I suspect that Byrnes Cottages have been demolished rather than a name change, they were in the 1911 census.
Reades Road i think is a name change between approx 1880-1901.

Byrne's cottages were just north west of the Dodder Bridge on Clonskeagh Rd. - about where O'Shea's pub car park is now. One of the Iron works was right across the river from them.

Reades Road doesn't ring any bells - what the date and source of this ?

found a reference to Reid's Road in the CofI Leeson Park in the 1870s...  this church could have covered areas in Ranelagh.

Shane, thanks for that, my post should have read "Reads Road", its from irishgenealogy.ie. Also the church in Leeson Park is mentioned in some of my ancestors papers.  As regards Byrnes Cottages, i knew that O'Sheas car park was once Henshaws Cottages they were pulled down late 1950's and along that Dodder walkway there are still a couple of cottages and i think i remember a few more being there in the past . I know the area quite well but never knew them as Byrnes Cottages.

Henshaw's cottages were beside the road, Byrne's Cottages were slightly to the west.

both sets of cottages are actually shown on the historic OSI maps - see :

   Clonskeagh bridge (http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,717338,730725,7,9)

The cottages are shown and labelled on the c1890 25" map, and seem to have been there back as far as at least c1840 as there similar structures shown on the 1st edition 6" map.
