Rector of Great Gonerby 1846-66.
Can anyone explain why he is reported in the papers as having committed suicide in 1860? From his date of death he clearly didn't!

There was another Wm Chas Inman 1810 b Bedale Yorks
1851 census has him as unmarried perpetual curate Gt Gonerby
Typical misprint by the newspapers.
-
But he is the only one I can find. He is also in 1861.
So who committed suicide?
-
Just a false alarm, I think. ::)
The reports all apparently came from a common source - same wording - using the words intelligence and alleged. Another way of saying "We have heard that ..."
The only death registration which matches the name occurred in 1866.
-
I agree it could be false, but the date wasn't 1st April!
The accounts of a cut throat are a bit specific to be merely invention, although the lack of church attendance as a reason might mean it was something he threatened to do?

A bit late coming in here, I know. William Charles INMAN actually married 9 July 1861 to Judith MANSEL at Laughten en le Morthen, Yorkshire.
He belongs to my extended INMAN family. Had no issue. I too found that suicide report, and tied myself in knots for a bit.

In addition to the reports of his death, starting on 9th August 1860, obituaries were published on 18th and 21st.
More bizarrely, on 18th August, the Benefice was advertised, value £100, with residence...The Rev W.C. Inman deceased.
It sounds as though he was missing, presumed dead.
Actual burial on 13th August 1866 at Great Gonerby.
