My father took this photo and on the back wrote Entrance to lane where the house he was born in stood.
I know they lived in or near Duleek but I'd love to find the lane on Google maps can you help please?
-
Found another one, he was baptised in this church, does anyone recognize this font?
-
it looks like the Gaulstown Cross, aka White Cross
see : link (http://irishantiquities.bravehost.com/meath/gaulstown/gaulstown.html)
haven't found it on the map yet - looks like it should be somewhere to the south west of Duleek, between the R152 and R150..

found it... this google street view is from the more major road. Your photo is from the other side up the cul de sac.
Gaulstown Cross (http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Balrath,+Ireland&daddr=Duleek,+Ireland&hl=en&ll=53.627437,-6.44949&spn=0.010638,0.059566&sll=53.624179,-6.484337&sspn=0.044287,0.119133&geocode=FW3_MQMddX-c_yn_ueBDSVtnSDEQu983qccAGA%3BFRG5MgMdXBqe_yk9-vB_zzhnSDGQ-TGXqccACg&vpsrc=0&mra=ls&t=m&layer=c&cbll=53.627429,-6.449491&panoid=Bl9S0vPkttReNwL4dzHq_Q&cbp=11,290.6,,0,8.09&z=14)
The Cross is labelled on the old OSI maps in the east of Gaulstown Townland - White's Cross on both the c1840s map 6 inch, and the c1890 25" map. See White's Cross/Gaulstown townland (http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,702551,765309,6,7)

That's brilliant Shane :)

That is excellent Shane thanks, I bet the church will be easy to find now.
Makes sense to me now as on an old V8 tape my father visited Gaulstown house, saying my grandfather worked for the family that owned it at the time.
I can't view the tape anymore and couldn't remember the name of the house until I saw it in your post
I just need to sit down and do at bit of map searching.
Thank you so much.

The townland of Gaulstown is split between two civil parishes - the western section is in Duleek to the north and the rest in Timoole.
Duleek RC parish includes the civil parish of the same name, along with 3 other civil parishes. Timoole civil parish is included in the RC parish of Beauparc.
There are two other townlands somewhere in Meath also named Gaulstown.
Shane.

Duleek parish church is in the town, and the church for Beauparc parish is apparently in the townland of Seneschalstown, which is to the north of Kentstown.

That was fun, I've got some nice images.
I think the house he showed on the tape wasn't Gaulstown house but a large house in Gaulstown.
Haven't found the church yet but not to worry I'll get there in time.
Thanks for all the help.

thanks.... there are loads of old ecclesiastical monuments, churches etc in Co. Meath so wasn't really expecting to find anything to match, but our friend Google Images showed a unlabelled photo which seemed to show a similar cross the same strange metal supports ... after that, 'the game was afoot!'

Hi Shane,
I had looked at those images (obviously not closely enough)- as you say there are lots.
It's amazing though isn't it that you can find it like that and that it is on Google street view. :)
Happy New Year

This stone cross is right outside my house.
Situated on the Abbey road from Duleek to Balrath.
Erected in 1675 for Sir Luke Bathe by his wife Dame Cecilia Dowdall. They resided in the local Athcarne Castle. For google map enter Reask or Athcarne.
The laneway is in the townlands of Reask / Gaulstown, Duleek
Let me know if you require further info. Tony Redmond

This is St.Cianan's Church in Mains Street Duleek. There are records of birth, death, marriages from 1865 approx. available in the parish office to the side of the Parochial house beside the church. These are in alphabetical order. The originals are within the Parochial house and copies are also kept in the library in Trim..............Tony Redmond

Oh Thank you Tony,
That's pretty much all I wanted now, I have a good idea of where they lived and now I have the chruch as well.
I'm not looking for any old records, my grandparents were from Westmeath but they were living in Meath when they had my uncle and father, but they only lived there for about eight years. I just wanted to get an idea of where and the photos were pretty much all I had to go on.

Let me know who were your relations in this area as we have lived in what was the old Geraghty homestead for the past 40 years.
The WhiteCross was originally built into the corner of a house at this junction. When this house became derelict and crumbling the cross was erected in its present position which is about 6ft from the gable end of the original cottage.
-
They were only there for 8 years and left in 1930. James Nugent and his wife was Mary. He was a ploughman but lose an eye so lost his job. My father did talk about getting water from a stream I think it was behind the house. The house was gone when he went back in the 90s. But it was on that small road where the cross is.
I would be interested to know who he might have worked for, who would have had a big farm in that area? Just if you know it's not worth going to any trouble for.

I have interviewed all of the elderly people in the Whitecross/Athcarne/Duleek area and none remember any Nugent's in this area. (There were Nugents in Duleek). However none of my neighbours were living here before late 1930's. Have you any further information on the location of your Nugent's home in this area. I have unearthed the remains of the house that stood on the exact location of this stone monument. This stone house fell down in the early 1900's and was replaced by a cottage on the opposite side of the road built 1912.....Tony

Oh you have gone to so much trouble athcarne. Thank you so much.
I don't have any more clues about the house.
I never thought to get this far, getting the name of the church and getting so close to the house is great.
I'll have to wait for the 1926 census for any more clues. The house went with the job so his landlord I would assume was his employer, well hopefully.
Thanks.

Dear Sinann.
Just got new info from Duleek Church records on your Family.
Francis Kevin Nugent born 1920's was baptised by Fr.John Murphy in Duleek Church.
Patrick Vincent Nugent born 1920's was baptised by Fr. Gillick address "Gaulstown"
Father James and Mother Mary Fitzsimons. Confirmed in the 1930's in Kilcullen.
.........Hope this is useful......Tony

Athcarne you said
PS.... Your Grandfather worked for John Nugent at Gaulstown House. He was the large landowner in Gaulstown / Tymoole. You will find John Greene in the 1911 census.
I assume John Nugent was a typo, John Greene is in the 1901 Census and his son William (I think) is in the 1911, John's mother (I assume) in Griffith's Valuation, so you are saying this family still had a large farm, more or less all of Gaulstown in the 1920s?
The river Napper could that be considered a stream?
-
Sinann
John Greene owned over 260 acres of lands at Firmount, Gaulstown, Tymoole and most likely some more townlands in East Meath. John's mother Anne was the owner as recorded in Griffiths.
Gaulstown House is a beautiful Georgian home and is presently occupied.
The small river that runs between Gaulstown and Tymoole is the Nanny River.
I don't recognise the Napper River....regards.......Tony

Thanks Tony, all this information is great.
Don't know where I got Napper from I had looked at the maps the day before and just got a bit confused I guess.
Even though he was only six when they left Meath my dad always supported Meath in the football so I guess he had fond memories of his time there, unlike his brother who always claimed to be from Westmeath like their parents.
