Hi
Looking for information on the couple William DEVEY and Margaret Eleanor HARDING.
William was born in Market Harborough, Leicestershire, England in 1857.
Margaret was born in London, England in 1860.
She was also married to John William SMEDLEY prior to her marriage to William in 1890 in query Sydney, Australia.
I have found them in England in 1891 and 1901 on the census.
Margaret appears to have two daughters from her first marriage:
Muriel May SMEDLEY b. 1884 in England
Ethel Margaret SMEDLEY b. 1885 in England
William and Margaret have two daughters in England:
Gertrude DEVEY b.1891
Dorothy DEVEY b. 1895
After 1901, I have no idea where they are except that they are said to be in Australia because William's sisters Emily WILLSHER nee DEVEY and Alice Mary SLACK nee DEVEY apparently move to Australia ( no sure where query NSW or Western Australia).
Any information on this family would be most appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Cheers Helen

Hi,
Thank you to Malky, Dee and Gerry for all the information and the links to see more information.
It appears that Dorothy DEVEY becomes Mrs John H BROWN and Gertrude becomes Mrs William HAMMOND and then Mrs Samuel B BATEMAN.
I have no idea what happened to Margaret's daughters from her first marriage. I wonder if they stayed in England or came to Australia.
Open to any suggestions on how to trace the above daughters - Dorothy BROWN nee DEVEY and Gertrude BATEMAN formerly HAMMOND nee DEVEY.
Thank you again.
Thank you in advance for any further help.
Cheers Helen

Helen, I thought their burials may have turned up on this site.....
http://www2.mcb.wa.gov.au/NameSearch/search.php
However, there's no Gertrude Bateman, and so many Dorothy Browns, that unless you know of a second given name for Dorothy, it is probably a very long shot!
Maybe someone can spot them on an old electoral roll to get an idea of their whereabouts earlier on.

I wonder if this is Samuel B. Bateman, husband of Gertrude?
I suspect it is.....

Hi Wivenhoe,
Thank you very much for the information about William HAMMOND. Just checking that he was in the Australian forces ( see answer below) because Gertrude had cousins born in England and they fought in the Australian Army.
Now I know what happened to William HAMMOND. I think I have found William HAMMOND on the Commonwealth War Graves site - died 24/12/1916 and buried in BRIGHTON CITY CEMETERY (BEAR ROAD).
Hi Dee,
Thank you for the link to the newspaper article about Gertrude and her husband Samuel Bateman. As to Gertrude and Dorothy having middle names, I have no idea because I am descendant from William DEVEY's sister Lucy RICE nee DEVEY who died in 1930 in England. My branch did not know about the siblings in Australia.
So thank you both very much for your information and help.
Cheers for 2012

Hello Helen
I have just discovered your messages regarding William Devey and his wife Margaret Eleanor. I have been researching this family extensively and have a great deal of information on them. My connection to the family is through one of the daughters from Margaret Eleanor's first marriage, Ethel Margaret Smedley. She was my grandfather's first wife. I also have a lot of information on their daughter Gertrude Devey as I have been in touch with some of her grandchildren in Australia. Dorothy has been more difficult to track. They moved to Australia with their parents, while the two daughters from the first marriage remained in England. I also have photographs of graves, etc. If you require any further information, I would be happy to assist.

Hi Helen
I have been unable thus far, to find the death of John William Smedley. Yes, Ethel Margaret Smedley married Alexander James Price (1904) and they had a son Edward James Robert William Price (1905). In 1910 they sailed aboard the Saxon to South Africa leaving the boy behind in England. He stayed with relatives and died at the age of about 16. By 1913, AJP and Ethel Margaret were separated in South Africa. I cannot find any Divorce Records. But by 1913, AJP was "married" to my grandmother. Ethel remained in South Africa until about 1934 when she returned to England. She is buried in an unmarked grave in Bexhill Cemetery. I have her Death Certificate which records her as being married to Alexander James Price and that she was a Missionary. I am away from home and do not have all details with me unfortunately. I can supply more detailed info in a few weeks' time. Kind regards Gail
