Title: Francis HOWIE & Eliza CLUNES m 1862 Victoria
Post by: patrexjax on Saturday 31 December 11 15:26 GMT (UK)
Hello all, I am totally puzzled by this family!  ???    I know that these folks married in Victoria and had at least 4 children: Francis (Frank); Robert, Jessie, William.  The puzzle is the fact that Francis Howie was b. 1830 in Monquhitter, Aberdeen, Scotland and Eliza Clunes was born about 1830 in Santiago, Chile, a British Subject according to various UK censuses where I have found them, including 1881.  What I can't seem to grasp is WHY Francis Howie (an insurance agent in Newcastle-on-Tyne, NBL, England) picked up his family and went to England!  Especially since I don't know of any family that he or his wife would have had there.  I know this could involve some speculation, but perhaps Francis ran afoul of the law in Australia or some other tragedy struck the family?  Any and all in put on what this family did during their time in Australia would be sincerely appreciated as I am really out of my element in his area!  Happy new year!    Pat

Hello mum mum, Thank you for that information; it does help narrow things down.  AND, I have found Frances Howie in Monquhitter, Aberdeenshire with his widowed Mother and siblings in 1851.  So, the net is closing in!   Thanks again for the birth places!   ;D  Happy New Year to you and yours!  Pat

Some info from the Victorian Government Gazettes.

September 1860 a Francis Howie of Armstrong street Ballaarat was a 1 share holder in the Suburban Mining Company Ballaarat.

In 1861 the busines partnership of Francis Howie and John Martin farmers of Burrumbeet under the firm of "Martin and Howie" was dissolved by mutual consent on 1st June 1861.

In October 1865 a Francis Howie leased 571 acres, 1 rood & 8 perches in the agricultural area of Woodnaggerak in the parish of Woodnagerak, Victoria.

The 'Burr' in the births was probably Burrumbeet.

Hello all, While I stepped out for a while, you have all been quite busy!   ;D  In Scotland, Francis Howie's family were farmers and agricultural laborers.  Upon his return to England, Francis is listed in the 1881 census as an "insurance agent."  I am trying to find him in the business directories in Newcastle for that time frame....I will let all know of the outcome on that!  Thanks to all for your input and help.  It does appear that he left Scotland and arrived in Australia sometime after 1851 census and before 1860.  I have not found him on a ship's list..... :'(   Happy new year to all!   Pat

Hello all!  I think I have partially solved the mystery!  The daughter, Jessie, married  William James Fairless who was born in Southwick, County Durham; they apparently had at least one child who was born in Victoria (Francis Howie Fairless b. abt 1894) and then THEY returned to Sunderland to have more children. And, in fact, ELiza (nee: Clunes) was living with them in 1901 as a widow and died in 1906.....  So, I guess the only other question I have is Eliza Clunes herself who was Born in 1830 in Chile....can anyone tell me why she would have been born in Chile?   ???  Again, thanks for all the sterling help!  Happy new year!  Pat

Hi again,

Do you have their marriage certificate, it should tell you her parents names and their place of birth, occupation etc. You can buy and download an image online. around $18 AU, then we should be able to trace her parents.

Hello mum mum, thanks for the suggestion...before I spend that $$ on a possible collateral line, is there any OZ census available that would show the couple around 1894 or so??    Pat

I assume you mean FAIRLESS/HOWIE marriage :)

New South Wales bdm's are online

Marriage

FAIRLESS William J
HOWIE  Jessie
District Newtown

There are a couple of possibilities for Mrs FAIRLESS arriving in England, however one has nationality English and the other not recorded.  I can't see them arriving together.

A few snippets re Francis.

Just some extra info for you.

Australian BMD certs are excellent and have much more information than English ones - so long as the informant knows and shares the correct information -exactly what info is on the various state certificates is shown here:
http://www.jaunay.com/bdm.html

Victorian historical certs can be downloaded immediately. If you are ordering any from NSW it is cheaper and quicker to use an accredited transcription agent who will email you the info.

http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/howToTraceYouFamTree.htm#TranscriptionAgent

There is a shipping entry for the Cuzco, Sydney-London, arriving London 23 December 1895.
Mrs W FAIRLESS, 35, in the column for occupation, calling etc she is listed as 'wife'
Frances Howie FAIRLESS, 2, listed as 'son'
Can't see William in this entry.

Judith

Hello judb, Thank you so much for the arrival information as well as cert details.  Yes, this would be Jessie and their son arriving from Australia.  William may have come ahead of them to establish his business: in 1901 census he is listed as a "shopkeeper beer off & provisions" in Sunderland on #1 Australia Street!   ;D  Happy new year to you and yours.   Pat
