Hi
I have found a website that details several prominent Quaker families in Mountmellick and quotes the source as page 31 - 38 of The Quaker's of Mountmellick.
Does anyone know where I can obtain a copy?
Thanks
Anne-Marie

Hi Wendy
There is a list of surnames (and no further information about them) which includes Bell. The list is of Quaker surnames taken from the burial records of the Mountmellick Monthly meetings and date from the 1650's to the 1860's. So sorry no individual dates, forenames etc.
There are also 2 lists of names :
1. Pupils in the Quaker Provincial Scool Mountmellick 1786 to 1886. So no Bell's listed.
2. Mountmellick as a girls school 1855 to 1886
1859 Hannah Jane Bell
1879 Emily H D Bell
Hope this of some use to you ?
Best wishes

Dear Anne-Marie,
Thanks for that info, the girls you listed are a bit past the date of my family being there but who knows, they could be related.
Too bad you didn't get the info you were after.
I hate getting excited about something and then the big letdown so I hope something else will come up for you.
I think I have other families at Mountmellick but have to check through my records - flat out at the moment but will talk to you again if that's OK.
Thanks heaps from Wendy

Hello Ann Marie,
long time no talk !!
hope you enjoyed the Quakers book.
would it be possible to check the name of Paine, please.
The name, I think, is from the Mountmellick area of Laois and we are trying to establish, when and where.
Thanks a bunch,
Jack :)

Hi Jack
I've had a good read and recheck - sorry no Paines.
The book also lists Quaker surnames in the area - no Paines.

Hello Ann-Marie
I am looking for a Shaw family that lived in and around Mount-Mellick Ireland.
A family member mentioned that they may have been Quaker's.
Would it be possible for you to check your book for such a family.
The line goes Joesph Born Dublin 1640
George Born 1707 Dublin married Mountmellick to Esther Neale 1730
Samuel Born 1747 Mountmellick married Mayboro to Dinah White 1775
George Born 1776 Mountmellick married Mountmellick to Margaret Shannon 1797
George was also married to Margaret Bloomer in Mountrath .
He then immigrated to Canada in 1821. Whatever help will be greatly appreciated.

Hello Ann-Marie
Thank You!
Elizabeth,Samuel and Margaret are my ancestors. When George emigrated to Canada in 1821 he left
Elizabeth and Samuel behind. He had been expelled from the Quaker's for joining the Britsh Army. He took Margaret with him. He also took his daughter Dinah, son Joesph and young son George whom I am down threw. We believe but are not sure he may have brought his second wife Margaret Shannon with him as well. Did children always start Quaker school when they were 9? Are there records of their parents?
When did the Quarker's begin in this area? Are they still there?
Sorry for all the questions but it's been a long time since I have been able to find any new information.
Best Regards

Hi Delton
I am really sorry the book doesn't mention parents nor any other Shaws. It lists Quaker surnames - and Shaw is in the list but no detail about the Shaws.
There are some websites:
http://www.mountmellick.net/
http://www.irishmidlandsancestry.com/
Which give detail about the Quakers in Mountmellick but not sure if they have details about your family - sorry!
Hopefully someone else can help you?
Happy hunting!! ;D

The Shaw family are found in Rosenallis Church of Ireland (aka Oregan) Parish - which is now united with Mountmellick and Coolbanagher parishes.

Hi there, The name of Shaw is well-known in Mountmellick and there is a shop in Mountmellick called "Shaws" which has branches around the country. There are some of the family there and there are some of the family now in Portlaoise, Athy and Carlow.
-
Just to add, where people from other countries have tried to track down their relatives in Laois, they sometimes write a letter to the Editor, Leinster Express, Portlaoise, Co Laois. To be honest, I couldn't say whether it works for everyone but it is a widely-read local paper.
-
The 'Archives' section of Laois County Library are located in the County Council office on the Abbeyleix Road Portlaoise.
They have extensive records of Laois, the kind you will not get in a local Library.
Amanda Hyland is the lady in charge of that section, and has an e-mail (I cannot give it here) and they have copies of the 'Leinster Express' from the first publication in 1831, They would most likely look-up the paper records if requested.

Hello Ann-Marie
Could I ask you to look up two more names for me?
Margaret Bloomer Shaw
Margaret Shannon Shaw
These were my ancestors wives.
It will be intresting to know if they were Quaker's
It would also help to explain why my ancestor immigrated.
I have been told that you would be expelled from the Quaker's if you married outside their society.
Best Regards
