Title: Burial in Highbury 1874?
Post by: Gen List Lass on Saturday 31 December 11 05:59 GMT (UK)
I found a death in the Pall Mall Gazette for Hugo Reinhard, formerly of China, he died at Benwell Road, Highbury on Xmas Eve.

He was married and had his children baptised as Anglicans so where would he be buried?

In the famous Highbury cemetery?

His full name was William Ludwig Hugo REINHARD but he seems to have only used Hugo as a forename.

Hi Gen

Valda has written an excellent guide to London Burials here

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,403492.0.html

It is highly unlikely that he is buried in a parish churchyard so you'll need to check local authority records.

I have checked the database at Deceased Online (for Camden & Islington burials) and there isn't a Reinhard entry 1874/1875.

He may be buried at Highgate cemetery, there are details of how to do a search here

http://www.highgate-cemetery.org/index.php/grave-searches

The search fee is a bit steep though.

Good luck, searching for burials in London is not an easy task.

Hello Gen List Lass,

You could also try Camden archives, who have a copy of the Highgate Cemetery registers up to, I think, the 1960s.  I think you or a friend in London would actually need to go there in person to do the search, but here's a link to their site anyway.

Hi

The full information on Highgate cemetery taken from the burial guide on Rootschat that Dawn mentioned in her post.

'Highgate & Kentish Town Cemetery, Swains Lane, Highgate N6 (1839) present owners FRIENDS OF HIGHGATE CEMETERY TRUST (FoHCT) http://www.highgate-cemetery.org/

Highgate cemetery burial registers 1839-1984 can be viewed at CAMDEN LOCAL STUDIES AND ARCHIVES CENTRE http://www.camden.gov.uk/ccm/content/leisure/local-history/collections/deposited-archives.en?page=8

Bishop Transcripts for Highgate cemetery (Anglican burials only) 1839-1871 held at the LONDON METROPOLITAN ARCHIVES http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/Corporation/LGNL_Services/Leisure_and_culture/Records_and_archives/
and at ANCESTRY http://landing.ancestry.co.uk/lma/default.aspx'

Camden Archives don't do searches

'The Centre receives thousands of enquiries each year by telephone, letter, fax and email. If you would like information about our holdings and services you may contact us by any of these means. However, because of the number that we receive, we are unable to undertake research on your behalf.'

Thank you for all of your replies. Much food for thought here.

Pity the Highgate searches are so expensive. I think I'll get his death certificate, that might give me a clue from his financial circumstances.

Hi Gen

If you can give me a few weeks to ease myself into the new year, I'll have a go at visitng the Camden Archives. It's been on my to-do list for a while.

Hi Dawn

That would be great!

Whenever you have the time and the inclination:-)

Need any lookups up here in Northumberland? I go to the Archives twice a week.
