Hi all
I have recently been adding Postems on FreeBMD from details on my certificates. Is there anyone else that does this and how much info do you give? If it's a marriage do you add the postem on both names or just one?
Carol

I've only a few UK people, but I always add postems, giving as much info as possible.
I add to both names in a marriage (tho' maybe I've missed out one or two)

Thanks Eadaoin
I am working my way through my marriage certificates at the moment, but have only put the postem on one name. I think I will add both in future.

I've added a few, I've also done added links so it's kind of a family tree
http://www2.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/information.pl?r=53285570&d=bmd_1322564104
But unfortunately it doesn't work as they keep changing the web addresses, the links would have all interacted with eachother
-
I like your idea Mark :)
I have added all of my marriages to both parties and give all details. I also do my birth and death certs the same.

It's a shame it doesn't work tho, they keep changing the web addresses of the pages so the links are no longer valid

I won't do that then. I do try and encourage those on here that are 'advertising' their unwanted certificates to put the details on there as well. ???
-
Thanks everyone for your replies. So do you put the witnesses on as well Rosie?
Carol
-
Yes I put on everyone except the clergy/registrar
-
Thanks Rosie
I have only just started doing this and it's so quick and easy I don't know why I didn't do it sooner. I hope my contribution saves someone the price of a certificate.

Can someone pardon my ignorance please :-[ and explain Postem's? :)

When you get a cert from the GRO, you can help other people by putting some of the detail (parents' names, etc) on the FreeBMD site beside the index of the cert
when you go to the FreeBMD site, and find an index entry, there's a little box called "info" beside it.
When you click on this box, you have the option to "add a postem" i.e. add some information.
when you do this, a little envelope appears beside the index entry

Thank you for explaining that eadaoin - what a good idea; will ensure I do that.
Happy New Year!

Hi All,
Just thought I'd add that I have found my first postem from a freebmd search!! It was for a marriage & gave exact date, place of marriage, father's names, witnessess etc....
Keep adding your postems!!
Gillian

Glad they have been some help. I still put all mine on whether they belong to my family or not. If everyone did it, it would save people a lot of money.
Carol

Just added another two postems!

It is good to hear someone has benefited from them. I have added 3 this week following a spending spree at the GRO. Hopefully they will save someone else spending £9.25 on them.

I'd be dead keen to join you all as I'd never thought of that use of the postem. But . . . don't you think you might be creating something of a headache for FreeBMD? I say this in the light of the thread entitled "Disappointed" that ran today.

I have added the ocassional postem but have never cracked how to read postems that are already there - any hints?

If you mean a copyright headache, then no. The information on certificates you have purchased is not copyrighted, and you can distribute it to others as you please (even online).
When putting postems on FreeBMD, I wish more people also posted their email address so I could email to thank them. :)

When someone has added a postem after about 24 hours an 'envelope' will appear against the entry on the results page - you just need to click it. :)

Hi Pejic
If there is a little envelope sign next to the pair of spectacles it means someone has left a postem. Click on the envelope for details of the certificate.
Carol

Rosie/Carol - thankyou, I had been trying to see if there was a postem, not realising that IF there was one I would get something to click. We live and learn.

I have been adding Postems for all my BMDs for some years now.
On Births I put Date of Birth Names of parents including mothers maiden name
Marriage - put on both records name of spouse and both fathers names and occupations and of course Date of Marriage
Death - Date of Death and age (can sometimes help!) and name of informant, adding relationship if applicable.
Another thing I have did some years ago was to take a name from my tree (in this instance Brain) then went through all the Births and where there were details missing ie Name or Reference Numbers, I made a note of these, went to Ancestry to look at the original pages and if possible place an amendment to get the record amended to show full details. I was very successful with this exercise, I must have done over 100 amendments and would say that I got around 95 of them amended. Have done some with others. It is not a quick job but you do feel very satisfied after as you feel you are not only helping yourself but many others.

You can search Postems at http://www2.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/ShowPostems.pl

Ibud,
Thanks for that link. I had no idea that you could do such a search. Quite an eye-opener the number and scope of postems made. I will definitely have to join you all! :D

Ibud - that is a fantastic link, I'll have to check back on all my previous finds - I have briefly looked at the latest postems and am surprised at how infrequently contact info has been left.
-
Great link, must remember to check periodically. I'm surprised at how many are corrections, surely it would be better to submit the correction to FreeBMD and have them update the entry?
Anyway, I have put details of some of my certificates into postems but not all, so thanks for the reminder.

FreeBMD's policy is only to accept corrections if the original transcriber made an error when transcribing. Even then, it still requires the transcriber to agree with the correction. Any errors in the original source will remain - that's why one will find a number of corrections shown in postems.
-
When I first started adding Postems I did put my email address in, then had 2nd thoughts. Often I was adding to people who were not related to me so I did not want to be contacted. Also you never know who will be contacting you and there are some 'odd' people around ;)
I do not need a thanks for my effort in adding, I know that I am always grateful if I find one on my own family, so I assume that others are the same.
:D
