Title: What is a Pantry Boy
Post by: keen on Wednesday 28 December 11 15:27 GMT (UK)
In a crews list of 1851 on a ship from England to India my relative (12 years at the time) was stated as a Pantry Boy. Could someone please tell me exactly what a Pantry Boy was in the context of being on a ship and serving in the 1850's?

Much appreciated.

Regards Andrew

As I understand it a Pantry Boy worked in the kitchens/galley of a ship as one of the cook's assistants. He would have done all of the menial tasks, lots of peeling and cleaning. Many later became stewards. If you google "pantry boy merchant navy" you'll find a good few examples.
