Title: Whaplode Drove - Abraham Cooke
Post by: napmay on Tuesday 27 December 11 16:50 GMT (UK)
Abraham Cooke married Elizabeth Phenix (nee Marshall) in Whaplode Drove in 1810. They appear on the 1841 census. Anyone with more information about the family, please?

Many thanks for your speedy reply.
I have traced the family back to Abraham and Elizabeth Cooke but cannot find any convincing information about their ancestors. Their son, Jacob, seems to have been running quite a large farm at Elm in the 1861 Census.
Their daughter, Elizabeth, married William Robinson at Whaplode Drove in 1832. I have traced their descendants and have the relevant Census information.
If you would like any of my information about Elizabeth's daughter Mary Robinson, John Castle, Mary Castle to the Terrell family, I'd be happy to share what I have. I am in the early stages of researching this family so have been searching for information online so far.
Any information on Abraham Cooke/ Elizabeth Phenix/Marshall's ancestors or on Whaplode Drove in the late 18th-early 19th century would be appreciated.
Thank you.

according to the Lincs marriage index for the area, Abraham cooke was also a widower:

PHENIX Elizabeth 27 Dec 1810 Lic/Both wid COOK Abraham Whaplode Drove

think this is Elizabeths first marriage:

PHENIX John 16 May 1805 MARSHALL Elizabeth Holbeach

this one Abrahams:

COOK Abraham 23 Oct 1795 Lic/Given as ROBERTSON signs
as ROBINSON ROBERTSON Ann Whaplode Drove

which would suggest a bap date for Abraham of about 1775 Whaplode Drove.

have you been on Lincs to the past?

there are 3 baptisms on family beta site all to John Cooke & Ann - earlier children must have died;

Abraham Cooke  21/6/1762
                        12/7/1767
                        20/12/1772

also lists the 1772 one on the 1841 census so will check A*

sorry didn't say but first Abraham Cooke s/o John & Ann was

Abraham Dekey Cooke so then:

COOKE John 09 May 1753 Lic/AD Great Postl(and) DEKEY Anne Whaplode Drove

would seem to be Abrahams parents.

Many thanks for all of that, Diddy.

I'm really pleased to have the information and I appreciate the time you have taken to look it up.

Thank you, too, for the link.

I feel a trip to Whaplode Drove is needed. I often drive past the sign to it but have never made the diversion!

no problem - my hubby has ancestors from around that area too.

Each year in Oct we do a Meccano show at the Moulton windmill - next door to Whalode.  i was hoping to chase ancestors whilst there this year but had to miss the show becasue because of ilness.

the index i have is the Lincs marriage index 1700 - 1837 vol 1 (Elloe & holland deaneries). if you need further look ups please ask.

These are my partner's ancestors. He also likes Meccano so would be interested in more details of your October show.

I've just joined the list.
I have John Phenix and Elizabeth Marshall in my research.
John Phenix b. 1776 married Elizabeth Marshall 16MAY1805 in Holbeach.  Died 1829 in Holbeach Drove.
They had 8 children between 1808 and 1823.

That's strange! My Elizabeth Marshall married John Phenix in 1805 and then married Abraham Cooke in 1810, when she was described as a widow!
I wonder whether there were two Elizabeth Marshalls??

It looks like there might be.  One of their children, born in 1816, was Marshall Phenix.  It seems like this Elizabeth Marshall was married to John Phenix until he died in 1829.

Hi, just looked again at the Linc marriage index. may have been me causing the confusion unintentionally!

last time I looked under Abraham cook and found the marriage to Eliz Phoenix wid / looked up a marriage and found one Eliz marshall to john Phoenix and assumed same Eliz - sorry  :-X

this time looked up Elizabeth marshall  and found marriage to Abraham Cook 3/2/1814 Sutton st Ed.

so yes we have 2 Elizabeths and you aren't talking about the same person,

Mea culpa
