Unfortunately the info i can provide is limited but thought it was worth a try
My g,g grandmother married James Richard Thomas Baseley, a butler, in May 1904 in deptford. I am interested in finding out more about James Baseley, his birth etc. I do not know around what year it would be or where in the country even. I only know his Dad was also a James Baseley.
Many thanks

Hi
There is no birth shown on freebmd so you need to look for the family on the 1911 census to get his birthyear and birthplace
http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx
-
Marriage was 22.5.1904 St John Deptford and he was aged 30 - father also James - a licenced victualler
Isabel Shute was 31 father John occ shipwright
Witnesses John Shute and Edward John Shute
-
The 1901 census shows him as aged 28 and born Northamptonshire
www.1901censusonline.com
You need to check the 1881 census which is free at

A possibility: James BAZLEY - Daventry 3b 123 - Sep 1872 Qtr

A possibility: James BAZLEY - Daventry 3b 123 - Sep 1872 Qtr
Possibly not - Found on 1881 in Daventry, father listed as Thomas not James.
-
There is a James Baseley death in Northants in 1878 - age 41 or 44. RD was Southam
-
Heres James jnr's death
James T R Baseley aged 62 (1873) Wolverhampton 6b 645
-
Possible birth:
Birth, Sep qtr 1873
James T R BASELY
Shoreditch 1c 92
and then I think he may be the 17 yr old Shoreditch-born James BASILEY who is a domestic footman in Paddington in 1891.
Dad seems to be a Daventry-born James b abt 1834-6; - family in Stansted Mountfitchet, Essex in 1881 when James snr was a carman, but by 1901 he is a beer seller at the Cock Inn, Manuden - fitting with the occupation of licensed victualler as per the 1904 marriage certificate of James jnr.

thank you, with you help ive managed to work out that james baseley senior was born 1834 in daventry and james baseley junior also in northants in 1874. In 1881 they are all in the parish of essex which is where i know james senior owned a pub. I know that james junior was in kensington by 1901 working as a butler so the occupation and year and place of birth on the 1901 link you gave me match thank you!
now to find a marriage for James Baseley senior?!!! and any other children they had apart from james. ;)
xxx
thanks so much again x
just noticed your reply, james junior was james richard thomas baseley so maybe that is him, ahhh! i thought i had it all worked out!!

The 1881 census which you have (in Essex) shows all the children as born in London- James Thomas aged 8, Maria aged 5 and William aged 8 months.
Possible baptism and birth registration for Maria:
4 Oct 1876, St John, Hoxton
Mary Maria, born 2 July 1876, dau of James (blacksmith) and Mary Ann BASELEY, of 7 Forston St.
Birth, Sep qtr 1876: Mary Maria BASELEY, Shoreditch 1c 86.

It looks as though you have the right people - the only confusing thing is the 1901 census stating that James jnr was born in Northants which he seems not to have been. He was one of several servants in the 1901 household (which included his future wife Isabel Shute as a cook) so mistakes could happen - the householder, a widow in her 70s, may not have been too clued up about where her servants had been born. Perhaps the misunderstanding arose because somehow it was known or heard that James' father was originally from Daventry and somebody got their wires crossed.

I think you must be right avm as the previous information about his father owning the cock inn in manuden is right and also he married isabel so it must be the right people but as you say incorrectly listed as daventry. phew! great i have taken the next step, thank you
also mary maria sounds like a likely sibling but james is listed as blacksmith, if that is him he had many occupations!! anything on a marriage and maiden name for wife for james senior? thank you
xx

HI All.
lambroofer do you think that your James was born in the
Daventry Registration District as this man might fit the bill.
