Title: Mary Allen, Gilfach Goch, Rhondda
Post by: Vaynor on Wednesday 21 December 11 16:09 GMT (UK)
Hello.

Can anyone tell me about the operatic singer Mary Allen?  She lived between the years 1910 and 1959 and won the National Eisteddfod on two occasions.

Her married name was Mary Mainwaring and I understand that the people of Gilfach Goch presented her with a silver tea service in recognition of her achievements.

Happy Christmas everyone.

Hi

Can you tell us exactly what type of info you are looking for?

Are you researching her ancestry - parents/siblings etc and require help with census info etc?

It looks as though she married late in life (1949) to Charles Mainwaring  in Bridgend.  On the marriage reg she is shown as Mary W Allen

I can't find anything obvious about her online under Mary Allen - did she perhaps have a stage name?

Hi Carole.

Thank you for your note.

I know Mary Allen Mainwarings's personal details.  What I would like to know about is her professional life as a singer.  She sang under the name of Mary Allen as a solo artist for the BBC and with choirs.  She also did a lot of charity work.

Mary's husband Charles Mainwaring was the father of the founder of D J Motor Coaches, a firm Which I believe still has a base in Gilfach Goch.

Thanks again for your reply.
