I've just started looking at relatives who went to Australia so I must apologise for appearing a bit of a newbie on Australian matters. Using the resources listed on this site I think I've done quite well - I found the couple I was looking for, their dates of death and where their ashes were scattered. I'm a bit stuck in looking for the next generation - apparently they had 3 daughters so presumably they all married and changed their names. I'm hoping that obits may give the married names of the children (as they do in the US). What information do WA obits usually carry and which newspapers are the best ones to search? Do local libraries keep copies of newspapers?
I'm looking for:
Thomas Hunter BROWN d 24/12/1959 address at time of death 94 Douglas St, South Perth
Margaret Johnston BROWN (nee Wishart) d 15/11/1968 address 41 Beach Road, Marmion
Their ashes are scattered at Karrakatta cemetery - Crematorium Rose Gardens 14A 0284
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Jack,
I have used the state library of Western Australia "ask us" service
http://www.slwa.wa.gov.au/find/services/information_services/askus
and they have e-mailed me the death notices within a few days. It is an excellent service (and free).

Ros

Thanks Ros,
That sounds like just the thing I'm looking for. I'll give it a try.

There are quite a few mentions of the family on trove http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/result?q=%22thomas+hunter+brown%22~2
the digitised newspapers - only digitised up to about 1956 at present.
You may find engagement notices for the children etc
regards,
Ros
Edit to add: I found more relevant results searching for "t h brown"~2 + "south perth"

I noticed a Mary Blaik BROWN on the electoral rolls but not at the same address but in the same sub district, as Thomas and Margaret so this is now very speculative research. Her burial record at Karakatta indicates she was born c1909 so could be the Mary aged two on the passenger record.
Mary Blaik HEAVEY

The births to Thomas and Margaret in Victoria are not on the indexes to 1920.

No birth on free bdm but on Scotslands People there is one match for a birth for a Mary Blaik BROWN in 1909 and two matches for a marriage for Thomas BROWN to a Margaret in 1908. I don't have any credits at the moment to look at the records, however I would imagine you have the marriage information.

By the way you can get subscriptions to digital versions of the West Australian for after July 2004 until present day for $8 for 24 hour access. https://archive.thewest.com.au/sign_up1.php?sc=0
I think only Dorothy Phyllis Mary Brown is in that category. But hang on until tomorrow morning as I have been accumulating my queries for that time period and will take out a subscription and pm you any results.
cheers,

Thanks to all for your information. I'd only intended to do an hour's family history last night but with all the new info you provided I was up till midnight. This morning I see that there is even more!
I have the a copy of the marriage entry from scotlandspeople and I'm convinced it is the correct couple. Margaret Brown (nee Wishart)'s mothers maiden surname was Blaik so a child with that as a middle name is likely to be the right one. I'll follow that up tonight. Thank goodness for middle names!
I only met auntie Maggie once in the early 1960's but I got the impression they had done quite well for themselves in Australia so it would not surprise me if they returned to the UK several times to visit.
Best wishes,
Jack

Jack I pm'd you details of a living relative - could you please reply if you have read the message.

I found some death notices for Dorothy Brown in West Australian Oct 2006.
Can I post the images here? (I think I have seen others do this). Is the rationale that we can post the images but not type the names as the names on the image will not show up in a search?
I have been meaning to ask about this ... :-\

Dear All,
Just a note of thanks for all your help. I have today received a letter from my first cousin, once removed, the last surviving child of Thomas and Maggie Brown! Considering how long it took me to find some branches of my FitzSimons family I can't believed you've tracked down this branch in only a couple of weeks. Well done all of you!
