Title: Mary Ann KING birth or parents in Devon
Post by: offroad48 on Friday 16 December 11 06:46 GMT (UK)
I’ve been drawing a blank on the ancestry of Mary Ann KING (b. Abt. 1788) who was married at Hatherleigh, Devon on 18 Jan 1813 to Sampson MARSHALL. :'(

Sampson MARSHALL was from Stratton in Cornwall and was a young Lieutenant in the Navy. He was also the Warden at the docks in Plymouth in 1831 before he emigrated to Australia with his wife in 1834. I have much info on Sampson MARSHALL but no parents or birth place for Mary Ann KING. I know that her brother Richard KING with wife and five children were on the same ship to Australia.

There is one Mary Ann KING that I have found from LDS... Christened in 1786 in the Parish of Stoke Damerel (Portsmouth). However there is no cross reference (confirmation) to how she is linked or is actually the correct person.

Question: The marriage at Hatherleigh in 1813 may show her parents, age and her birth place. Can anyone help with any info on Mary Ann King and her brother Richard King. Where were they born and who were their parents?
Any assistance would be appreciated. Nigel (Melbourne, 8) Australia)

Firstly, Stoke Damerel is a parish adjacent to Plymouth, not Portsmouth.
Unfortunately, an 1813 marriage is unlikely to show parents' names. The inclusion of father's name & occupation was not introduced until 1837.
Please can you give details of Richard KING's wife & children?  It may help to trace them. The fact that Mary Ann KING married at Hatherleigh tends to imply that she came from that parish. The online parish clerk for the parish should be able to help you with a transcription of the marriage entry. Go to http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/Hatherleigh/index.html and scroll down to genealogy for the link.

According to Pigots Trade Directory (1822) a Richard King was the owner of the George Inn in Hatherleigh, a good place for Sampson and Mary Ann to meet.

A Richard KING married Creston DOWN at Hatherleigh 7 Nov 1785. They do not appear to have baptised any children there.

Thank you Martin & DOB7, :-[  I made a silly mistake whan I mentioned Stoke Demeral being in Portsmouth I knew it was Plymouth as I had found some other details. Regarding Richard King, he certainly had children when he sailed on the same ship as Mary Ann (nee king) and Sampson Marshall. Some good info from another person who wrote a note about Sampson Marshall ...."With his wife and 6 of their remaining 7 children (Richard Purvis stayed behind until 1837) he left London on 10th July 1834 aboard the "David Scott" arriving in Sydney, Australia on 25th October 1834. Also on board was his brother-in law, Richard King with his wife and their 5 children. I will do some more hunting here to find Richard King and family members. I do know that Sampson Marshall & Mary Ann had 4 children in Hatherleigh prior to more in London and Australia. I think the Richard King & Creston Down mentioned by DOB7 could have been the parents of Richard King.
