What a lovely surprise to see your post- and welcome to Rootschat. These Gilmours lived in Aghadowey townland in the parish of Aghadowey and the house was demolished a few years ago although I have lots of information on this family. Will go upstairs and get my file to post more details shortly.

Hi,
Was going to post details of some of Joseph's siblings but I am sure that Aghadowey (the site moderator) will supply much more than I can.

Hi
Kingskersell and Aghadowey thank you very much for the imformation it has been great to learn more about Gilmour's. Joseph was my great grandfather and not much was known about him so thanks again.
He was a taxi driver in New Zealand starting off with a horse and cart then moving onto a car.
Any chance you know when he went to New Zealand.
Cheers :)

Hi Aghadowey
It's been awhile but I have been doing some up dating of the family tree and was reading about your search for James Gilmour and how some of that was connected to my Joseph.
I have never been able to find when he (Joseph) came to New Zealand, there was some family talk that he come over with a cousin (an Alexander). Have just been given a photo of Joseph Gilmour and another man taken in Napier, New Zealand. On the back is written Joseph Gilmour and brother. Was wondering if you had any thoughts or helpful hints.

Dealing with the Alexanders first-
Mary Alexander had a brother Robert who might have been witness at marriage in 1862 but don't have a John Alexander anywhere in family.
Joseph Gilmore did have an uncle, Torrens Alexander, who went to N.Z. in 1875 and had family. When Torrens died 1935 in Taradale his children were in Puketapu, Taradale, Christchurch, Rotorua & Dunedin. On the Alexander side there was also a cousin, John A. Peden, who went to Australia.
Now for the Gilmores-
James Gilmore married Nancy Anderson & had a son, Joseph (likely other children as well).
Joseph Gilmore married Jane Moon. Children-
1. Arthur Gilmore
2. Joseph Gilmore, Philadelphia
3. Jane A. Gilmore, Philadelphia
4. Ellen H. Gilmore, Philadelphia
Arthur Gilmore married Mary Alexander. Children-
1. Emily Gilmore, Philadelphia
2. Margaret Torrens Gilmore, Philadelphia
3. Joseph Gilmore, N.Z.
4. Edward Arthur Gilmore, Glasgow
5. James Gilmore, Philadelphia
6. Jane Moon Gilmore, Philadelphia
7. Alice Mary Gilmore, Philadelphia
If your Joseph did go to N.Z. with a brother then it's one we've not heard of yet. Perhaps the photo was labelled years after it was taken? We do have lots of old photos in family albums (mostly not labelled) including some very old ones taken in Philadelphia but not even sure which side of the Gilmore family they were from. I can't recall any unknown ones from N.Z. but would be interesting to see if any resemblance to others we have.
I do know that your Joseph, and siblings, went to Aghadowey School (on site of present Aghadowey Presbyterian Church hall) then later Gorran School (don the road from present Gorran School) but from that time until he appeared in N.Z. I've not really tried to search for him.

Thank you so much for that.
-
I was wondering if you had any more information on Torrens Alexander, I can find him in New Zealand but not in Ireland. Thanks
-
Not a lot to find in Irish records for Torrens Alexander. He was baptised 2 Dec.1855 Aghadowey Presbyterian Church (born before registration of births so no birth certificate) and went to New Zealand 1875. The family lived at Lisnamuck where his father Hugh Alexander died in 1888. He had 6 sisters & 2 brothers (both went to Louisville, Kentucky). His mother Margaret Torrens died 1887 so his Christian name could have been from her maiden name and/or his father's brother Torrens Alexander.
