My grandmother from my father's side was Christine Moore from Dublin. She moved to Glasgow in the 1800's and married James Roberts. My dad is now 76 and has no contact with his mother's side although he knows he must still have family in Ireland. He says his mother always talked of a place called The Coombe. I've tried looking this up on maps and have had no luck. As you can see the information I have is limited but I'd be grateful for any info any one can offer.
Thanks.

Hi,
The Coombe is the name of one of the main maternity hospitals in Dublin, south side near the canal. I think the surrounding area is the same name. You could try looking for her birth entry in the indexes.

hi there,i have just seen your request for information on the coombe area of dublin, actually my mother came from around that area too.kate is right about the coombe being a maternity hospital which was located on a street also called 'the coombe',at least the old hospital was on that site but the new coombe hospital is now located nearby on dolphins barn street.back to the coombe street ,it is in the 'liberties' area of dublin which would be dublin 8 south city.located at the bottom of a street called francis street .hope that helps.at least you have a few other names to 'throw' into a search engine.let me know if you need any other info on the general area, would love to offer a look up for you but am unable to get to record offices at the moment.
regards anne

Happy Easter Sarah, Kate and Anne,
I cannot offer enough thanks to my friend who kindly recommended a lovely book by Máirín Johnston "Around the Banks of Pimlico" published by Attic Press. I spotted your enquiry about Christine Moore. I imagine Moore was probably a popular name in the Coombe area of Dublin. I have been browsing through and dipping into my book.
I noticed the name Catherine Moore. Catherine, in the late 1850s, was employed (with no testimonials) to teach sewing at the Catholic Ragged School in Park Street West.
All the Best, Chris

I can't believe it's been so long since the original post...I've no idea why I didn't respond at the time!
I've only recently started researching again. My dad said his mother came from the Coombe, I'm guessing it must have been the liberties area, as you suggested Anne. I'm guessing it was quite a poor area too.
I have more info on her parents, they were Jane Ann Hoggan and William Moore.
I'm sorry I missed the replies all those years ago - especially Chris' who I see passed away in 2009. Sounded like such a jolly man as well.
Sarah.

Welcome back, Sarah.
A quick search hasn't thrown up anything, have you been able to get a better idea of dates for Christine?
Do you know if she married in Ireland?

A William Moore Married Jane Hogan ,Dublin South 18th July 1897
http://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details-civil/1592906972339
dont see anything obvious after this ie 1901 census, if them could they have left after their marriage
-
There is a Christina Moore mother Hogan born Dublin 1905.
http://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details-civil/dad5c01012926
In the first post Sandra said her father was 76 so born about 1929 so his mother born 18+ years earlier but she also said Christine left Ireland in the 1800s so difficult to know without firmer dates.

Family are on 1911 Irish census

I think part of Coombe area is missing from 1901 census
I was just going to start checking for that possibility.

A Jane Anne Hogan born 25th Jan 1880 to William Hogan and Mary Anne Murtha
possible parents and sibling 1901 right area

Catherine Hogan born 27 Feb 1878 to William Hogan and Mary Anne MARTHA ?
-
Does the name Andrew McGrath and Parish of St Francis,Cumberland St Glasgow circa 1952 mean anything to you ?
-
I've just logged back in and I'm amazed to see all of your replies - thank you so much! I've not been getting email alerts, I'll check my settings.
I now know that Christina Moore and John Roberts married on 11th March 1924 at Somerville Memorial Church, Keppochill Rd, Glasgow.
I still don't know for sure when she came to Glasgow and my dad doesn't know either. Not a great deal to go on.
I'm going to read over all of your replies as I see there are links to census'.
Thank you so much for taking the time to look into this for me.
Dathai - you asked about St.Francis at Cumberland Street, Gorbals. I'm pretty sure this is where my dad married his first wife. Someone in my dad's family definitely married there, I'll need to go through the family tree and check.
My dad lived in the Gorbals for years, but the name Andrew McGrath doesn't mean anything.
-
the reason i asked about Andrew McGrath is on the baptism of Anne Jane Hogan born 25 Jan 1880 Dtr of William Hogan and Mary Anne Murtagh at Marrowbone Lane is recorded a marriage to Andrew McGrath in 1952 in Glasgow she would be 72yrs old at this date.

Did you get an official record of their marriage? as this would show her father's name and help tie her to the correct person when looking at the census returns, births and baptisms

There are a few possible Christine MOORES to look at just based on census returns
There are nine obvious possibilities on the 1911 census – LINK (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/results.jsp?searchMoreVisible=true&census_year=1911&surname=moore&firstname=chris*&county19011911=&county1821=&county1831=&county1841=&county1851=&parish=&ward=&barony=&townland=&houseNumber=&ded=&age=10&sex=F&search=Search&ageInMonths=&relationToHead=&religion=&education=&occupation=&marriageStatus=&yearsMarried=&birthplace=Dublin&nativeCountry=&language=&deafdumb=&causeOfDeath=&yearOfDeath=&familiesNumber=&malesNumber=&femalesNumber=&maleServNumber=&femaleServNumber=&estChurchNumber=&romanCatNumber=&presbNumber=&protNumber=&marriageYears=&childrenBorn=&childrenLiving=)
Of which one was also on the 1901 census that I can see
Christina MOORE aged 2 years at # 406.1 in Upper Rathmines (Rathmines, Dublin) in 1901
And at # 1.3 in Church Place (Rathmines & Rathgar East, Dublin) in 1911
Parents Edward and Anne
1901 LINK (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003712494/) & 1911 LINK (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000137389/)
Christina MOORE aged 1 year at # 4.3 in Aungier Street (Royal Exchange, Dublin)
Parents Andrew and Charlotte La Jorine - 1901 LINK (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003727224/)
Christina must have died between 1901 and 1911 as the six children alive are all listed – 1911 LINK (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000198578/)
I cannot see in 1911
Christina MOORE aged 3 months at # 3 in Sutton North (Howth, Dublin)
Parents Patrick and Anne - 1901 LINK (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003675904/)
Christina MOORE aged 6 years at # 3.1 in Ormond Circle (Inns Quay, Dublin)
Parents John E. C. - 1901 LINK (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003689629/)
There is a John MOORE in an orphanage of the correct age and Christina Moore in an Industrial School LINK (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai002900426/) which might be them
Also these families could have emigrated and last scenario - the family did emigrate before the 1901 census.
The marriage certificate should be your first point for searching as it will give you additional information :)

Yes, I have the certificate from Scotlands People. It gives the mother and father as William Moore and Jane Anne Hoggan - or Hogan as it appears on the Irish census records that Dathai found.
I think Dathai has found the right family.
I can't thank you all enough for your help. I'm fine until I trace ancestors back to Ireland and it seems that all come from Ireland on both sides of the family.
I have, amongst others, Flynns (or O'Flynns), McGaugheys (or McGeacheys) and Dunbars. I seem to be stuck but will persevere before calling on you for help!

I'm going up to Glasgow this Saturday, so will ask my dad if this rings any bells.
Thanks again for all your help, you've been amazing!
