This is (obliquely) related to my previous query about James ELGAR - which was never actually resolved.
Sarah Ann DODGE (nee ELGAR) moved to Whitecross, Netherbury, presumably when James ELGAR died. It appears she rented a cottage from Mary VINCENT (nee TIZZARD) on a plot left to Mary by her father William TIZZARD. I'm now trying to get a fuller story about Mary VINCENT.
I can see her baptism record (1826) and census entry (1841), but then I lose track of her until 1871, when she's back at home as a widow.
The closest I can get to a possible marriage is to William VENSON (the family are at Oxbridge in 1841), then I can see William & Mary VINCENT somewhere in Netherbury in the 1851 and 1861 census, but know neither exactly where they were nor whether they had any children. I don't know exactly when William died either.
Anyone able to put some flesh on these bones for me please?

Hi B.E.

William George GILLHAM 27, a shopkeeper, his wife Francis 36 & chd: George 4, William 2, Henry 2mths plus a boarder Joseph CHILCOTT 80, retired Fisherman.
Francis & Joseph (I suspect her father) born Burton, rest b. Netherbury

Robert 1 mth

Here's an old Rootsweb topic on the Netherbury VINCENTS - including brief mention of your Mary marrying William. He was 1 of 10 children. In 1841 Census his father, Robert was enumerated as VENSON - it may have been an 'accepted' old name variation:

Thanks, AMBLY - yes, I was pointed in the direction of the rootsweb thread from a completely source about five minutes after my post. So what I've managed to confirm is that the VENSOM and VINCENT families of Oxbridge (part of Netherbury) are one and the same clan.
We can now see that the couple went to live in Oxbridge and appear to be childless in 1861 - as I suspected. Still no trace of the 1851 census details (I think it should still be in one of the Netherbury districts) or of William's death.
*** A further related complication is a supposed marriage between Robert SYMES (b.1829) and Priscilla TIZZARD (b.1828) at Beaminster in 1879. Robert is certainly a widower by the time he marries Dorcas Annie PAUL in 1895. I can't find his first marriage anywhere. HELP!! ***

This great resource:
http://www.opcdorset.org/
sublink:
http://www.opcdorset.org/NetherburyFiles/Netherbury.htm
An OPC volunteer indexer there has transcriptions of Netherbury burials (and baptisms & marriages) , which you can email her to ask about as they are not online yet.

Good man!! :)
Geraldine Gasparelli, the Netherbury OPC, already gets enough grief from me - it's a pity all her transcriptions aren't online yet. I think I make good use of the OPC data that's available; my main stumbling block is the details of the records I find on other sites like ancestry and LDS. None of these people are part of my own family tree (this is museum-related work) so the objective is to glean what I can entirely without cost! My asasumption, which may be rash, is that people like yourself enjoy helping me out as much as I enjoy assisting our museum visitors...

Sorry, I always use the phrase 'Good man' in a gender-independent way. Same as when I walk into a classroom with 'Morning, chaps', regardless of who I'm actually teaching. But you couldn't have known that!
I'd found the Langdon record, but not the Loscombe one. I shall just say thank you.
;)

No worries :D
Most of the mixed gender groups I work with are "Hey you guys...." ;D

A cottage at white cross, Netherbury has just been sold at auction by Symonds and Sampson, including a 6.99 acre field. In November 2018, lovely to see what the interior looks like as it obviously hasn't been lived in for a while
