Title: Elisha Fisher in Comber
Post by: Sammy An on Thursday 08 December 11 14:18 GMT (UK)
Hi, I have been trying to find info on my great grandfather in Comber for 3 years and have gotten nowhere and am now going slightly mad with it all.

His name was Elisha Fisher he married someone I believe was called Elizabeth in 1906 in Belfast having moved there around 1900 or so I've been told.
He died in Belfast in 1948 around the age of 80 again just what I've been told as there is no age at death on his Gravestone.

He had 4 daughters all now dead, they were Annabella who was the eldest but I don't know when she was born, Ellen who died in 2001 and my grandmother Mary born 25/02.1916 who died in 2003 all were born in Belfast as far as I know.

I have no info on any of them at all, and cannot find a birth for my great grandfather Elisha in Comber.

Any help would be very very very much appreciated.

Sammy.

Someone posted a message on Ancestry boards looking for the death of Christopher Southern and Ellen Fisher Southern.  She appears to be the daughter of Elisha Fisher and Elizabeth Boyd and somebody posted the death of Elisha from cemetery records :

Name of deceased Elisha Fisher
Last place of residence 51 Lisburn Road (44 Edith Street)
Age 62 Years
Date of death 9 July 1948
Date of burial 12 July 1948
Cemetery Dundonald Cemetery
Grave section and number C5 603
Burial type Earth Burial

Giving his birth c. 1886.

It looks like Elisha and Elizabeth went to Scotland after their marriage and Ellen was born there in 1907.  They were back in Belfast c. 1910/1911 where their son Samuel Arthur was born.  Their daughter Anne Boyd Fisher (Annabella?) was born in 1918 in Belfast.

You can find them on the 1911 census living in 30 Edith Street (Pottinger), Down) on this website : In order to find them put 'Elesha' down as the surname and 'Fisher' as the Christian name.

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Pottinger__part_of_/Edith_Street/220949/

Elizabeth's father Samuel and her brother William James are living with them as 'boarders'.

Living next door in 29 Edith Street is a Mary Fisher who may be Elisha's mother.

Sammy,
Speculating that the lady next door may have been Elisha's mother and as she had been married for 47 years then I have found a marriage near Cumber on 4 Feb 1865 Thomas Fisher married Mary Beattie in Ballygowan Presbyterian Church, Parish of Killinchy, District of Newtownards.

Greetings,
Above information is right on.  My great grandfather was Robert James Fisher, brother of Elisha :). Only thing I can add is that Robert Beattie, father of Mary was a famer from Ballykeel, and Benjamin, father of Thomas was a labourer. Would love to share any other info, we are distant cousins.
Thank you
Kathleen

I am in search of Fisher families in Co. Down in Northern Ireland. Our family tree seems to go back to three Fisher families (I hope otherwise my grandparents are distant relations!!). Here is what I have

1. James Fisher who married Mary Ann Fisher 11/6/1881 in Newtownards Civil Regisrty. James' father was Benjamin Fisher who married Martha McConnell 7/5/1867 and was born 1820. His father was a Thomas Fisher, this is where my hunt ends!

2. Mary Ann Fisher's (above) father was George Fisher who married Sarah Cairns 28/12/1865 at St Marks Church of Ireland. Her grandfather was William Fisher , again I loose track.

3. John Fisher father of Sarah Fisher who married Hugh McClune 3/3/1883 in Saintfield 1st Presbyterian Church.

I think most of the Fishers are from the Newtownards area of Co. Down but not 100% sure. Any additional info that you have would be very helpful.
