I am trying to find anything on a Jane Maltman who died on 18th October 1891 at 21 Walnut Crescent, Mount Clair, Essex County, New Jersey. She may have been living with her uncle James Monoghan.
The date of her death was taken from a grave stone which I found in Scotland.
I am trying to find her sailing to America, perhaps her death notice in a local newspaper or perhaps an entry in the censuses. Anything at all would be a bonus. Anything on James Monoghan may also help with my research. I am afraid I do not have any information on him apart from the address.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I have just looked at the reading on the stone again in Scotland and it says Jane was 19 years old. What you have found certainly looks like the Jane I am looking for.
Would love to hear what you have found.
Thanks greatly for your reply.

Hi Betty
any further information, where was the gravestone, was the inscription added to someone else's? Might help the connection with James Monaghan...

OK found the inscription at Borgue Kirkyard, no 34

I got a bit sidetracked.
I was just about to send the info.

Well I've crawled the internet and haven't been able to trace anything else. I don't have asubscription to the New Jersey census for 1885, 1895 so can't get at the details for John Monaghan. Can only suggest you send off for the death certificate to get more clues...
Best wishes for Christmas :D

Hi Betty
Jane Maltman (b.circa 1872 Balmaighie) was my Great Grandmother's aunt. She was one of 7 (that I know of) children born to James Maltman (b.circa 1851 Tongland) and Agnes Monaghan (b.circa 1848 Kelton)
I have Jane's mother Agnes with a sister named Grace but no other information on the Monaghan line as I was following the Maltman line.

Thanks Catherine for your reply. Very much appreciated.
I will need to get back to you on this as I was enquiring on behalf of someone else and I will not be able to get in touch with them until Sunday or Monday.
Meanwhile thanks again for getting in touch.

Betty, since yesterday I have done a little more searching and discovered that Jane Maltman had more brothers and sisters than I thought. Tragically many died as children and young adults in a short space of time. I am descended from one of the sons who made it to adulthood, Jane's brother James, who married and had children, one of whom is Margaret, my paternal G Grandmother, whom I remember very well.
This MI gives details of the deaths including Jane's
