Hi,

We have someone who was court martialled (in the Navy) in the 19th C and we got a copy of his record electronically from the National Archives.

Wellington in Somerset is near Taunton.  (There is also a town called Wellington in Shropshire.)

Some old newpapers covering the area are:

Taunton Courrier & Weekly Advertiser
Bath Chronicle & Weekly Gazette
Wells Journal
Western Gazette

I'm a little confused by the other thread - that says he was tried in Madras - where does the info of Wellington in Somerset come from?

i am searching for a country of birth and any other details  for charles reilley or riley.aka reiley or retley.
he was born about 1844.i have his convict details but no country of birth-thinking usa..
came to west aust as a convict(OCUPATION,SAILOR) on the ship merchantman.convict  no 8117.
trial was in  madras 20/8/1862.sentenced to 14 years for arson.
he married emma bonser 1874 in west aust and died about 1888..
thanks ..helen

Hi guys.  :)     David your query re Madras. The information Chas was convicted at Madras is found on the Australian Convict Index 1788 - 1868. Date 20 Aug 1862. A quick trip to the UK in chains?  ??? At a General Court Martial at Wellington, Somerset, England 20 Aug 1862, he was sentenced.  Ref: Australian Convict Transportation Registers, Wellington, Somerset, England. 14 years for arson, with William Larmour or Sarmors. Then transported from Chatham 14 Jun 1864 on the 'Merchantman,' bound for the Swan River Colony in Western Australia. Ref: UK Surgeon Superintendents Journals of Convict Ships Merchantman. All found at ancestry.com.

Be interesting to find where he was held for those two years 1862 - 1864.

The court martial at Wellington suggests he was in the Navy, his occupation listed as 'sailor.' Might also explain his tats.

The British India's Civil Wars c. 1848 - 1881, involving Madras, suggests Chas was putting his political two bobs worth in...

Dates on these records indicate he was born 1841/1842.  I suggest he was Irish.

Information on the Royal Navy and the court martial would be interesting. The newspaper directions are very helpful!  :) :)

Cheers

Just to add to the confusion of where  ::) Charles Reily was sentenced under a General Court Martial at Wellington, Somerset on the same day having been said it was Madras....... :-\ and Charles being a sailor, as was his father.....there was a ship named 'Madras,' built 1827, half burned 1844, "lost by fire," but, said to have been listed 1860 (but not 1864)  to the Mercantile Navy, registered London.

http://www.mightyseas.co.uk/marhist/maryport/madras.html

Can anyone make sense of this please? The ship and the sentencing, I mean, not the email....then again... :-\  Did it live to sail again with the Mercantile Navy, after having been said to be "lost."  ???

Hats off to those who looked a little deeper at Charles's tattoo's,  :-* definitely a sailor, and had sailed around Cape Horn, ( ship in full sail), some USA convictions with the American Coat of Arms.........

Would appreciate any comments.

Hi Helgra  ;)

Yes it is interesting, found a paper on line that explains ' reading the bodies of seafarers.' They wrote all their cultural, political and personal convictions via the way of tattoos during long days at sea on their arms and chests.  They did have meaning to them.

http://matrix.msu.edu/hst/hst202/docs/newman_essay.pdf

It definiently confirms the tats were made by mariners who were at sea a long time. The anchors etc, Liberty written was common, for when they went to shore !

You could also google wikipedia on Cape Horn....the ship in full sail was their pride and joy, for those who achieved it. Their committment to the American Coat of Arms is interesting, even though I have the idea they were British, perhaps Mercantile Navy. Court Martial in England. Perhaps the parents emigrated to the US early on.

I was hoping some of the clever miltary guys on the site could help find more about Madras.......the place or the ship...they are very knowledgable about navy and military and court martials.   :) :) :)

Not like some of us girls......... :-[

Anyway, every little helps.
