(Posted for a friend)
Norman MacLeod was a crofter and fisherman from near Stornoway and Gran was Effie Macgregor with a croft at Tolsta Chaolais near Callanish. They moved to Glasgow for work about 1900.
This is all I have immediately so any help much appreciated, backwards, forwards or sideways.
Thanks,
James.
-
Hi
This might be then in 1891 but maybe a little old :-\
17 Portroller?, Stornoway
Norman Macleod, 50, fisherman
Effie, 49
Mary, 15, general servant
John 14
Effie, 8
Kenneth, 12
Malcolm, 4
All b. Stornoway
Does your friend have any children's names. McLeod is a pretty common surname in Lewis.
gnu
-
I think that they're still in Stornoway in 1901~
10 Portvoller, Stornoway
Norman McLeod, 58, crofter
Effie, 58
Mary, 24
Effie, 16
Malcolm, 14
Mary, visitor, 24, fishworker
All b. Stornoway.
gnu
-
gnu, thanks though I have no idea as yet (as I said earlier) this is all I have immediately. I will have to try harder to winkle out some more details if possible.
Thanks again.
James.
-
All surmise right this minute but, perhaps the 1900 is elastic?
-
I've been trying to pinpoint Effie (Euphemia) but can't get a definite hit around Callanish (parish of Uig)
This could be the Norman that I found in 1891-1901, in 1881 with a different wife. The elder children's names and ages match
21 Portroller Road, Stornoway
Norman McLeod, 36, fisherman
Henrietta, 36
Mary, 5
John, 4
Kenneth, 2
All b. Stornoway
gnu
-
Thanks again.
Do you suppose Tolsta Chaolais would be a point for registration or would it need to be Callanish?
As given to me, there was nothing stated (it may have been implied) that the two were married.
I appreciate that MacLeod (and variant spellings) is a very popular surname.
James.
-
Hi
Tolsta Chaolais is fairly close to Callanish and they were in the parish/district of Uig, so that registration would be where the registrar was located - I would say probably Carloway.
Here's a modern map to show it's location ~
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0i3c/
I checked all of Scotland for a marriage but nothing is coming up. i think you'll need more information from your friend - for example how is she/he related to them. There must be some link ancestor that more is known about.
gnu
-
Hullo,
All I can say at present is that my informant is a grandchild. Add to that I'm in Scotland, he isn't :)
Fun huh? ;D
Many thanks.
James.

Just to let you know that Effie is short for Henrietta.

Not heard of that before, Emma :)
I've usually heard it as Henny, etc. with Effie being for Euphemia
It's not mentioned here:
http://www.whatsinaname.net/female-names/Effie.html
http://www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=henrietta
I'll have a look for a Henrietta Macgregor - I think I looked when I saw her on the census but will recheck.

Only marriage showing (1860-1881, Stornoway or Uig) for a Norman and a Henrietta is
1874 Stornoway Norman Mcleod and Henrietta McLeod
No M*cgregors
I listed all the Norman M*cleod marriages.
James - I really think that your friend should start with what is definitely known and work from that, otherwise it's all guess work.

Hi again :)
I've tracked down the birth of Malcolm McLeod (b.c. 1887) on the 1891 and 1901 censuses, and it makes interesting reading.
Malcolm McLeod, 7 January 1887, Portroller, Stornoway
Parents - Norman McLeod, fisherman and Henrietta, maiden name McLeod
Parents married 10 Nov 1874, Stornoway
This fits with the marriage that I mentioned in Reply #11
So, either this is the couple and the McGregor surname is a red herring or we need more info about, say the ages/places of birth of your friend's parent and siblings. If you can get this info without revealing their names, it would give some kind of time frame for Norman and Effie's births/deaths.
gnu
Added - gone around the long way to find the Euphemia/Effie/Henrietta link~
The Gaelic Oighrig can be variously 'translated' as Euphemia, Effie and Henrietta, amongst others

Emma, thankyou. I was certainly unaware of that.
Its strange I think that I've thought of Effie as Scottish, yet I had an aunt with no Scots in her at all (from London) called Effie.

I'm just concerned a bit as the stuff passed on to me suggested the family left Lewis around 1900 for work. Figures don't add up do they?

The two quotes that you have from me were merely to show that there were McGregors in Tolsta Chaolais but no Effie/Henrietta,etc. and that there was a Henrietta Mcleod.
There's nothing in the Glasgow area or Lewis for them circa 1900 - I had a quick look at 1911 but nothing stood out and SP is not cheap for census searches! Maybe you could have a look and save my credits.
I'm sure your friend has some facts wrong. If they're his grandparents, hows old is he?

Reply #14 does have merit though the 1900 thing is still a problem I think. Maybe that's an error.
Will need to check with the chap again and try to squeeze more details - if he has any.
James.

Wow - thanks a bunch - that sounds so patronising! I've been working on this for a good while and I get that!
I'll withdraw from this search now.

I'm sorry, it certainly wasn't meant to sound that way - I do apologise most sincerely.
I was simply comparing it with other suggestions is all.
I really do appreciate all the work you've done on this thread. I've a job catching up with you.

I've just heard back from him and apparently, the name Norman should have been Murdo.
So, Murdo MacLeod b.1874 married 7/6/1901 to Effie Macgregor also b.1874.
He in turn was getting info from someone else, I can''t say who as yet. I'm in Scotland, he's in NZ.
Sorry for the confusion. He isn't experienced in this FH stuff so I offered to try and help if I could.
He will be 'over 50'.
James.
-
I found her death hours ago but discounted it because her husband was Murdo:
5 Dec 1944 Partick
Effie MacLeod widow of Murdo MacLeod, shipwright. Age 72
Parents - Malcolm Mcgregor, crofter and Christina, m.s. McLeod. Both deceased.
-
Murdo's parents were Murdo Macleod and Anabella m.s. Smith
-
Bless you.
I thought I'd found that Malcolm McGregor (b: ABT. 1806) was married to Christina McKay (b: ABT. 1811) and they went off to Canada.
Marriage - 28 FEB 1861 Carloway I think.
You are a gem.

I have fairly free access to the census information (except 1911) and some BMDs so don't need recompense.
I'll concentrate on Effie's family first and then go on to Murdo's.
Effie's parents, Malcolm McGregor and Christina McLeod, married in Carloway on 17 March 1870. This from the IGI - I've not looked at the full cert.

Wow! What a load! Thanks seem wholly inadequate for all the work you are doing.
Funny thing too is that I saw mention of Old Kilpatrick - I was in 'digs' there many many moons ago whilst working in Clydebank.
Silly as it may be but I was in that area last year on holiday (staying in Scalpay).
James.
-
If you go to Freecen (http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl ) and select 1841, Ross and Cromarty and enter Neil McLeod, b. 1820 (he underestimated his age, I think), the family will come up in Tolstachulish. You can then take a virtual stroll round the township and see if there are any likely kin.

I'll need to try again - I got Stornoway and Uig

Hi
Think I know about Effie Macgregor. Think she was my grand aunt
-
I'd love to know more, either here or by pm.
James.
-
Ok.
I'd like to make contact. Google Blackhouse Village Isle of Lewis and you'll find my contact there
-
Google has many entries - am I to scour through them all?
-
The first entry you'll find my contact
-
I'm away from home just now, in a b an b in Edinburgh - no phone. Do I take it the email address is what I should use?
-
Tolsta Chaolais would be a great interest!
-
e-mail will be fine.
-
On its way (if the ferry is running ;D)
-
I could have mentioned Callanish.
-
Hi
Just came across this - hope you're still checking the site.
I may be able to help with this quest. A Murdo MacLeod, born c 1881, from Cromore, Isle of Lewis, son of Murdo MacLeod (deceased) and Annabella (nee Smith) married an Effie Macgreggor from Tolsta Chaolais, Isle of Lewis. They lived in Knightswood, Glasgow and had six children.
Murdo MacLeod was my grandfather's brother and I have information on the other strands of the family.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

annaruadh,
yes, still interested.
James.
-
Yes, this is my family. John MacLeod, Murdo's elder brother, was my grandfather. He married when he was in his 40s as he assumed responsibility for his mother and his siblings - their father, also Murdo, died some three months before Murdo's birth. I would know something of the MacLeod family history.
Interestingly I contacted a Mr Macgregor from Tolsta Chaolais I think in December (or very early January) looking for information on any descendents of Murdo and Effie's but drew a blank. This was, of course, shortly after you began making enquiries.
If your contact would like to get in touch I would also be very interested in knowing something of Murdo and Effie's family.
