Title: Publishing details for Atlas/Map req.
Post by: Fresh Fields on Tuesday 06 December 11 10:50 GMT (UK)
Hello.

I would be grateful if some one with experience of the Atlases of Scotland would give me the Title and Publisher for the Atlas containing County and Parish details in Scotland, that this clipping has been copied from.

A very helpful Family History Centre Librarian photo copied several Country/Parish pages for me some 30 years ago. Such details are not on the bottom of any of the pages I received, so all these years I’ve been unable to give credit for same. In more recent years I re-contacted that Library in an effort to find the source publication, without success. More recently I’ve been looking on line, and though I found similar atlas / map pages I’ve not been able to find the correct one.

Alan, slightly different but may help, see link :- http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/sct_cmap.html?315,444

Follow the instructions and the parishes show per shire.

Example here :- http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/ABD/parishmap2.html

There are some excellent maps here:
http://maps.nls.uk/

If you are looking to give credit for using the maps in a publication, might the maps be out of copyright anyway?

Alternatively, you could use another similar map whose publisher's details you are able to find, and use that instead ...

Hello and thank you Malky & Ruskie for taking the trouble to reply.

I find the 1st & 2nd Edition Ordnance maps on nls VERY informative, now that I've learnt how to navigate the site. Zooming in is the secret, to get all the detail, with a lot of the habitations named.

My problem with searching graphic content, is that my service is dial-up into the country side, so it can be quite slow, and at times impossible if the web page has all the mod bells and whistles.

On the nls site I found the John THOMSON Atlas maps similar, but I would like to use the one format as illustrative of the various Counties / Parishes
whence our fore bares came from, before travelling around the globe seaking a brighter future.

Hello again.

Now found that probably I'm looking for a GAZETTER. Have found GROOME'S Ordnance Gazetter of Scotland, and what an excellent book it appears to be. But the maps do not bare the same page numbers, and unfortunately I'll have to wait until I have access to a broadband connected computer to be able to read it. My dialup takes forever to down load the pages for viewing.

Just out of interest, I have just downloaded the Renfrew map, and enlarged the download. The size is 15.8 mb.

Malky

Update :- after downloading the first map, things go a lot quicker. The first download must include extra viewing software.

Hello again, and thanks for your continued interest and suggestions.

Malky the answer is both.

There is a number of us here in New Zealand, that are interested in any little detail that we can add to our knowledge re our ancestors pre the 1855 civil registrations. One of those is to be able to identify the actual place they lived/worked. We are intrigued to find that say 'Cloverneuk' on a document, refers to the name of a dwelling/farm, [by zooming right in can be found on an ordnance map] and in my case 'Flowerbank' as a postal address, will still get to the correct dwelling 150 years later. Only last night I got a PM from another here in NZ asking for assistance in this matter.

Being down under, we are a world away from those records that you still need to walk in, in person, to view, [Minutes and poor application records] so are hunting out any other clue that we can find, like the Horse Tax records and named properties.

The Gazetter’s, or what little I’ve been able to see, appear to have much information under one cover. Sort of a combination of; Statistical Account / Guide  / and Ordnance Maps, with plenty of info re the old Churches / Parishes.

#1 Stubbornly, out of interest, I would like to name the particular publication that has been my guide for 30 years [Illustrated on 1st post]. I will know it when I find a map of the Parish of Lanark on page 20, Glasgow Environs p 21, & Renfrew p26.

#2 From what I’ve been able to view on Archive, org and ElectricScotland, com the Gazetter’s like Groome’s are great but the down loading speed makes them impossible to read. By nominating say page 20, and waiting for a considerable time I can get to see that page, but from memory Groome’s had some 500 pages, which included some great illustrations.

Alan, have you tried these from the National Library,      http://geo.nls.uk/search/mosaic/
General Roy's maps are particularly interesting, you want the Lowland one.

Hello. Just an acknowledgement. Home now at 11pm after a hectic three days away, and out again first thing in the morning. Will reply in a few days time, when I'm able to do justice to your offers of help. Many thanks - Alan.

EDIT. Hello again. Took the time to dial up the 'Roy' Lowlands map of Renfrew/Cathcart this morning. I was timed out on my first try, but with a second try, and some data in hand, got to pan the Renfrew Map. While I've never used ‘nls’ to view this set before, I have for the Ordnance ones. A great service, especially if you have a faster service.

I do have example clips of the Roy maps, which have been on forwarded to me, by other researchers, as past of their notes, and or, illustrating some web pages I've visited.

Thanks Skoosh for the suggestion.

- Alan.

PS. What I'm after is the maps pin pointing locations of the Parish Church / Kirks for researchers tracing OPR records and the likes, c1800. If a record says Bogtoun, Castlemilk etc you can find it on the Ordnance map, then go looking for the neighbouring places of worship. Years later I’ve found a missing child on a neighbouring Church record, but with a slightly different spelling, so missed on a family name search, but would have been found on a Hugh Wallis Batch Search had I known about that Church. The Cathcart record of that time lists sibling order so is great for pointing out gaps in your findings. Just trying to help others, from my experiences of searching.
