Hi Helen,

When Charles got married, did he give his parents names?  I'm not too familiar with Australians certs so don't really know what is on them or not!

I was about to also ask whether you had his Mariage and Death Certs.
I have one fron 1869 that had Parents names and occp's.

I am not sure waht to suggest other than the Death Cert might reveal more depending on who theinformant was. Hopefully Emily.
A Tree has him dying in 1884 and Emily remarrying in 1888 to John McPherson.

Also Convict Central has him age 22 in 1864 so born c 1842.

I wonder if his tattoos have any meaning?
Crucifix, sailor, woman right arm, American coat of arms, woman with flag, LIBERTY, left arm, ship in full sail on breast

And I wonder if the India Office would have records of court proceedings from Madras - might be worth an email to them? http://indiafamily.bl.uk/UI/Home.aspx

According to here http://www.nmm.ac.uk/explore/sea-and-ships/facts/ships-and-seafarers/amazing-facts-about-tattoos a full rigged ship symbolises that a soldier has sailed around Cape Horn - is that the same as a ship in full sail?

Hi,

In case this helps, the image for "Australian Convict Transportation Registers – Other Fleets & Ships, 1791-1868" shows,

Vessel: Merchantman
Voyage Date: 29 Jun 1864
Colony: Western Australia
Charles REILEY
Where convicted:  General Court Martial  Wellington
Date of Conviction:  20th August 1862
Term:  Fourteen

Ancestry has transcribed the place of conviction as Wellington Somerset, but the image doesn't show that.

Regards,
Daisy

Oops...I see you already know this as I've just seen your other post here,

Maybe a moderator could merge the two threads :-\

Since he has Liberty and the American coat of arms among his tattoos does that not suggest he is American or at least spent some time in the states.  He had an Irish last name and a tattooed suggestion that he was a Catholic.  It might be worth trying the Boston or New York areas. HB

thanks a lot for your help.
yes,confusiing.
record on the merchantman says tried in madras..
then there is this court martial in somerset..
maybe the ship madras was set alight?
hence the arson charge?
will keep hunting..
regards helen..
