Hello,
Does anyone know about this family:
William Simpson married Lily Beels 1920 at Grimsby they had a son Kenneth W. Simpson 1921 at Grimsby.
My husband's mother remembers visiting a relative at Grimsby when she was young.
Thanks

Hello,
Has anyone a Grimsby Directory dated 1920/30?
If you have could you look up William Simpson of Grimsby for me please?
Thanks

Are you trying to find their ancestors?
In which case, buying the marriage certificate will give you fathers names to start with, as well as ages (and so a clue to birth?).
Or are you trying to find descendants?
RootsChat policy is to NOT name living people (to avoid identity theft amongst other reasons).
A strong possibility for Lily in 1901 is:

I had to draw attention to it! :)
Anyone remember Reckitt's blue? All about it here http://www.frankjump.com/002.html

Thank you for sending me the 1901 census for Lily.
I am mainly interested in the SIMPSON side of the family and am trying to find out if they were in the shipbuilding trade.
My mother-in-law remembers being sent to Grimsby by her family to stay with relatives to convalese after an illness. The only thing she can remember is that they were in the shipbuilding trade. It was about 1924.
William's father was William Owen Simpson born 1867 India. He died 1933 in Grimsby. This is the William who might have been connected to shipbuilding.

But you need more information!
For example, there are 79 William Simpson's living in Lincolnshire in 1901. 29 of them are under 20 years of age!
And 489 William Simpson's in Yorkshire. About 220 of those are 20 or under.
That's why you need (for example) the marriage certificate, in order to know who his father was, and his age at marriage.

William's father was William Owen Simpson born 1867 India who married Mary McDonald. William Owen Simpson died at Grimsby in 1933.
William (the son) died 1927 - place not known.
Sorry about any confusion.
I have searched the 1901 & 1911 census for William Simpsons born in India but can't find any that fit. As you say there are a lot of William Simpsons.

William's father was William Owen Simpson born 1867 India who married Mary McDonald.
He was a Rope maker in 1891 wasn't he? I think he was still making ropes in 1901 but birthplace given as Sheffield. There was a son born in Sunderland which tallies doen't it?
In Barton on Humber, RG13/3108/25/42
Moved to Grimsby by 1911, aged 44, again born Sheffield ... now wife Mary born in Sunderland too. :)

Dear Geoff,
Thanks for this. I did look at the Grimsby 1911 census and discarded it - I thought it wasn't him.
Why should he suddenly start to say he was born in Sheffield?
You are right though in 1891 he was a rope maker.

This is the marriage, no more details I'm afraid.
Wesleyan Methodist Chapel Arlington Street 19/08/1920 SIMPSON William BEELS Lily Catherine

I think this is the death & burial of William Simpson, the son in 1927.
This William Simpson was married to a Lily Catherine Simpson, so that would be maiden name Beels. He is buried in Cleethorpes Cemetery, grave ref B M08. He died at Hull Royal Infirmary on 5th December 1927 and was buried in Cleethorpes cemetery, Trinity Road, Cleethorpes on 8th December, 1927. Last known address 47, Lindum Road, Cleethorpes. At the time of his death he was 35 years of age.
Occupation: Shunter.

I would suggest that you contact Grimsby Central Library where they have a very good local history section and would be only too pleased to see if they could find the voters registers from 1919 onwards for Lindum Road, Cleethorpes to see if you can find when they first went to live there.

I had a look at this resource too, Scartho Road, Cemetery, Grimsby
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~engggfhg/
So far no show of William Simpson senior, but you could always contact the library again for burials at Scartho Road, they are on fiche at the library. The Archives at Grimsby also hold such records-only those cremations & burials after 1970 are held by the North East Lincolnshire Crematorium at Grimsby.

Dear Tom,
Thank you so much for all this information. My next step was going to be the Library - I thought I would look for an obituary. You are right the 1927 death is for the son.
The marriage you gave me was particularly useful as I know he was a preacher but did not know what church.
I have just found the burial of William Owen Simpson - he died 9 Oct 1933 and was buried at Scartho Road Cemetery, Grimsby 12 Oct 1933.
Thanks
-
The information as regards the marriage is from a CD of Grimsby & Cleethorpes area marriages, some 42,000 local marriages recorded mostly from marriage certificates available from a Denise Light, of Grimsby at the below named website.
http://www.angelfire.com/de/delighted/
On the same website you will find the Absent Voters List of 1919, the addresses & military information for those men who although able to vote in 1919, couldn't because they had not been demobbed. I did check the list but young William was not amongst them.
You will find information about Methodist local preachers from Peter Nockles at Rylands College Manchester which holds many Methodist Church records.
No doubt the local newspapers, The Grimsby News and Telegraph will have at least an announcement of the death, and if you are lucky floral tributes.

Thanks Tom.
I am working through your suggestions.
