Title: Gibbards in Wanganui, North Island
Post by: mumphjam on Tuesday 29 November 11 18:07 GMT (UK)
I'm researching the Gibbards in North Island, specifically, near Kai Iwi, Wanganui, Wellington.
I'm trying to trace the offspring of a sheep farmer, Charles Gibbard who married an Ellen Parnell in April 1890. I know they had five children. One of these actually came back to England on a visit in 1954/55, I suspect to visit their parent's english roots. I just need help filling in details, say from censuses etc. Any thing please.

Hi
Before we commence a whole tree, it may help if you list the children, spouses that you have so far and the one that went back to england..then we won't repeat what you have.

Have you seen the free indexes of the Electoral rolls online at ancestry..they are a great help

I'm overwhelmed, thank you so much, I've spent some considerable time trying to trace this family, possibly because they must have gone steerage to get to New Zealand. Thank you, can I have some time to digest this lot of treasures and get back with a firmer idea of the family structure and any questions. Again thank you.

How do I get at the free Electoral Rolls and census returns for New Zealand from England?

Can I obtain printouts or similar?

Again thanks for you efforts, I now have the family tree from Charles Gibbard and Ellen Parnell, (strangely no mention of the rest of the Parnell family who disappeared from Suffolk, England about 1890). Charles and Ellens children, but still no clue as to which child visited us in Banbury, Oxfordshire in 1954/55.

Do you have records of temporary emigration form New Zealand?
Thanks again.
John

Just an observation, the Florence Ellen 1895/2881 listed in the marriages post #3 , could possibly be a sister of your Charles married 1890.

I think Charles came out to New Zealand on his own in about 1885. The rest of the family split up after his mother's untimely death in 1862.

There were Gibbards on South Island from about 1850, in business etc, that came from Oxfordshire, Berkshire area of England. This could be one of them. I'm following up on a step-sister of Charles Gibbard following him out to New Zealand.
I have discovered that William, a son of Charles, was in fact married to Delicia Russell ? and they had children. So more to follow up in the BMD records I guess. In order to get at electoral rolls for NZ I have to pay a substantial premium to Ancestry over my existing subscription, so I guess I will leave that until our depression here blows over (sometime in 2125 apparently!)
Thanks again for your help it is much appreciated.

The free index of the rolls at ancestry is excellent
you don't get a lot more helpful details..residence address and occupation

If there is a particular one that you need info from, you can ask
but in order to track where people are the free index is really good.
The full copy is not usually helpful to find children as the children have usually left home by the time they are enrolled.  so you don't get the family groups like you do on UK census

I live in Wanganui and I have been and talked to a * who has done a Gibbard Family Tree. He is familiar with the descendants you are enquiring about. He does not have a computer so I will PM you next week with an e-mail address direct to Colin's daughter (she is away until Monday) so you can get some answers. Cheers.

Thank you very much.

Just in case * has no idea who I am - I am Eva Slades nephew, her sister Flossie's son John Mumford. Eva was the daughter of Florence Ada Carpenter, Elizabeth Gibbard was her mother-in-law.
