Hello,
I'm looking for some information on my grandfather's parents John Traynor (possibly Trainer/Trainor in Ireland) and Catherine Smyth.
Both from Rostrevor born around 1880s then they moved to Glasgow/Lanarkshire after they married around 1900.
I would like to know more about them, siblings, parents, address etc if anyone can trace them.
Thank you.

I have a Treanor/Trainor/Traynor database for Kilbroney parish which covers Rostrevor and this is what I have on your family:
8 Feb 1875 James Trainer married Ann Gribben in Kilbroney parish. Witnesses : Hugh Morris, Rose Berry
Children of James and Ann :
Born 4 Jan 1876 Mary, daughter of James Trainer, Ann Gribben.
Born 24 Jan 1877 John, son of James Treanor, Ann Gribben
There may have been other children but I could not find them.
In 1901, James and Ann are living in Knockbarragh townland, outside the village of Rostrevor with their daughter Mary. In 1911, James, a widower, is living in Knockbarragh with his daughter Mary but in 1914, Mary marries Joseph Murphy in Rostrevor Catholic Church on 19 May 1914.
Here are possible deaths for James and Anne :
name: Ann Trainor
registration district: Kilkeel
event type: DEATHS
registration quarter and year: Jan - Mar 1906
estimated birth year: 1849
age (at death): 57
volume number: 1
page number: 487
name: James Trainor
registration district: Kilkeel
event type: DEATHS
registration quarter and year: Oct - Dec 1920
estimated birth year: 1847
age (at death): 73
volume number: 1
page number: 368
You can find them in 1901 on this website :
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/Rosstrevor/Knockbarragh/1236998/
Their surname is spelt Treanor in 1911.
Unfortunately I do not have the father of James Treanor so I cannot go further back in my database. If you order the marriage cert for James Trainor and Anne Gribben, that will give you their father's names. Then repost to this site and I will see If I can get you back a further generation.

I'm a bit confused here. The OP says "John Traynor (possibly Trainer/Trainor in Ireland) and Catherine Smyth" but the details in the next post seem to be for "James Trainer married Ann Gribben" :-\

Sorry, I meant to say that James Trainor and Ann Gribben are the parents of John Trainor who married Catherine Smith in Rostrevor in 1900. I gave his birth in 1877. Mary who married Joseph Murphy in 1914 is his sister.

Hi,
I have had a look for the fathers of James Trainor and Ann Gribben and neither father is listed. Also on 2 Oct 1900 John Trainor matrried Catherine Smyth in Rostrevor Roman Catholic Church.

If you looked on Ancestry Ireland for the fathers of James and Ann, the reason why the names are not there is because that record was taken from the Kilbroney parish records where the parents names are not given. The OP will have to get the marriage cert to get the fathers' names.

Wow, this information is great, thank you so much. I had no idea where or how to start looking but this gives me so much, thanks.
Happy Christmas everyone.

You are welcome. If you get James Trainor and Ann Gribben's father's names from their marriage cert, I will be able to go back further for you - I also have a Gribben database for Kilbroney parish, but there were a few Ann Gribben's born around the same time, so I would need to know her father's name to find the right one.

thank you. Can you tell me how I can go about doing this. Where to I apply to for the certificate? to you have a web linke i can use?
thank you so much for your help. My dad was delighted with this information.

If you go to this website, you can find out how to apply for a marriage cert. www.groireland.ie
Even though Rostrevor is in County Down, Northern Ireland, you can still access Northern Irish births, marriages and deaths through the Irish GRO up to 1921. You can't apply for the marriage cert online but you can apply for it by sending them a fax or posting the form to them. Apply for the photocopy of the actual information on the register as this is much cheaper than getting an actual cert and everything that is on that photocopy will be on the cert.
To apply for a marriage cert, you need the following information :
Groom : James Trainor
Bride : Ann Gribbin
Year : 1875
District : Kilkeel
Vol. No. : 1
Page No. : 771
Once you are in the website
Click on "Apply for a Cert"
Click on "Certificate Application Form in English"
Note 2 under Types and Forms of Certificates on the first page will tell you about the photocopies which cost €6.00 each.
Fill out the information needed and tick the box beside "Photocopy" under Section 3.
You can then post or fax your application with a Euro cheque/bank draft or else give your credit card details on the form I have been assured by the GRO that these details are treated securely.
You can also apply for the death certs for James Trainor and Anne Gribbin Trainor if you want, with the details I gave you in a previous post. After 1876 you need to give the quarter of the year they died in which is listed in the information already given.
Regards
Deirdre
