I'm attempting to help James77 with his research of the Schiff family.
The 1841 census records Esther with daughters Emma, Betsey and Amelia.
The 1851 records Esther (called Ernestina) with Emma and Amelia and a married brother Lewis. Another brother Saling is also recorded.
Could SKS please check their reported places of birth?
Many thanks in advance.

Lewis Ernestina and Emma are born Prussia.
Amelia born Deptford (HO 107 / 1524 / 280 / 17)
Saling also born Prussia (HO 107 / 1546 / 106 / 14)

I had expected some hint of Poland.
Can I possibly twist your arm to have a look at the 1871 entries for Saling and Lewis/Louis?
Another RCer has read 'Wolstein' as Saling's birthplace.

Saling is Prussia Wolstein (RG 10 / 522 / 6 / 6)
Louis/Lewis is just Prussia (RG 10 / 152 / 17 / 28)

I had expected some hint of Poland.
I'd always understood that Prussia included parts of what we know as Poland today.

You're dead right.
I think that Wolstein (more often spellt Wollstein) was in the Prussian province of Posen, i.e. Wolsztyn near Poznan.
About half the population was Jewish in 1837/8.
Thanks for your help.

Jen,
Could I please trouble you to check the family members living with Louis and Fanny in 1861?
Would you also mind checking Abram and Leopold Schiff recorded in Knaresborough, Yorkshire in 1841? An Abram and a Leopold Schiff died in East London in 1850 and '51 respectively.

Thanks, Jen.
FindMyPast lists a 14-year-old Hannah Schiff living with Louis and fanny in '61. Is that a mistake?

Yes - the actual name, as far as I can read it, is Honorah Cashman aged 19 ::)

Hi Jen B , Is the photo attached to your message a Schiff? My husbands maternal grandmother was Estella van Lier (nee Schiff) daughter of Abraham and Caroline (nee Van Mentz)who was the son of Saling and Katherine (nee Mosely) Does anyone know of any photos of this family? I am researching our Schiff branch of the family for our grandchildren. Kind regards Jennifer

Hello
Thank you very much for trying to help. However, please note that you have the incorrect Louis Schiff. Saling's brother Louis was still living in 15 Langham Street, London W1 in 1871 and he passed away in Forest Hill in London on the 5 November 1875. He was married to Fanny and as far as I am aware they did not have any children.
Best wishes
Paula
