Title: Church Records, Dublin
Post by: npl on Monday 28 November 11 14:42 GMT (UK)
Hello Rootschatters,

I am wondering if anyone can help me. Can anyone tell me if all the parish records for Dublin have been put online at irishgenealogy.ie?  If not can you tell me which parish records are missing?

         Thank you.

         Kindest regards,

         Nora

What area and denomination are you looking for ?

Most of the records on IrishGenealogy are for the city, but it does include some for the suburbs and county.

Hi Shane,

Thanks for your speedy reply.  I am not sure of an area of birth in Dublin. I am just going by names at the moment. I am looking for births but cannot find them. They would be Catholic but I have one line that may be Protestant. Not 100% sure on that.

     Kindest regards,

     Nora

Unfortunately no matter how many parishes are added online, there will always be gaps and missing records.

At the moment at least one major City RC parish not included on IrishGenealogy would be St. Pauls, Arran Quay. This is only available on RootsIreland (pay-website). Many of the county Dublin parishes (but not all) are also included on the same site.

Hi Shane,

Many thanks for that. I will give them a try and see what comes up. If I don't find them there then I don't know where to go next.

     Kindest regards,

are you certain these births took place in Dublin ?

If you have a couple of names and approx. birth dates maybe post the details here to see if anyone might find anything for you.. (include any census details, or later marriages if you have them)

Hi Shane,

Thanks for your reply to my post. I am searching my MITCHELL  and FOTTRELL lines at the moment. I am looking for the births of:-

Alice MITCHELL born approx 1850s  father William MITCHELL. Lived at 21 Cork St, Dublin. Fathers occupation was vintner.

Bridget FOTTRELL. born approx 1830? married 1852 In St James Church (R.C). Mother Margaret.

Bridget was married to Peter MITCHELL, possible brother to the above William.

I have searched everywhere but no luck on these. Thanks for any help in advance.

    Kindest regards,

    Nora

I know I looked for directory entries for Mitchell before, but the one I found was Peter ... do you have any certs or documents with an addresses for William in Dublin ?

previous topic for reference : 21 Cork Street, Dublin (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,566447.msg4188587/topicseen.html#msg4188587)

Hi Shane,

I have a marriage cert for Alice which gives her address as 21 Cork Street and her father as William. Peter took over the running of the pub when William either retired or died.

Peter died in 1880.  It gave his address as 21 Cork Street. Previous address was 32 Chancery Lane where all his children were born.

    Kindest regards,

    Nora

.....
Bridget FOTTRELL. born approx 1830? married 1852 In St James Church (R.C). Mother Margaret.
...

I had difficulty searching for this marriage... looks like it was 1856 rather 1852 ?

Marriage of Peter Mitchel and Bridget Fottrell - 3 Feb 1856 (http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/96fd2e0456385)

No addresses unfortunately - so no clues there...

A problem with searching for early records for people in Dublin, like other cities, is that many people moved to city over the years. Unless there are clues like addresses to follow it can be difficult to work back when the parish records can lack detail.

Fottrell is quite a rare name - so it's should be easy enough to locate a baptism if it's included in the parishes covered by IrishGenealogy. Since there's no sign of it maybe Bridget  was born somewhere in Co. Dublin, or even outside Dublin ?

Hi Shane,

Thank you so much for finding a baptism for Bridget FOTTRELL.  The marriage you found for her and Peter MITCHELL is the correct one. I made a mistake in the year as I didn't have the information to hand. I don't have a father's name for her as there wasn't one on her marriage information, so I still need to make sure this is the right Bridget FOTTRELL as there were a few around at that time. I don't know of any siblings so can't find father's name through that.

Thanks again for all your efforts on my behalf. Not the first time you came to my rescue!

     Kindest regards,

     Nora

Hi ,

I'm looking into the Fottrells also, I have recently learned my great great Grandmother was Jane Fottrell from Co Dublin and on the 1911 census there is a Bridget Fottrell visiting her which I have taken to be her sister , from the church records for her childrens (twins) baptism her name appears as Bridget Fottrell is a sponsor for my Great Grandfather. I have yet to get her marriage cert to get her parents name and there address Jane married Peter McAuley in 1886 but the online index says they got married in South Dublin they lived and settled North Strand Dublin

It is quite an unusual surname maybe they might be connected somewhere

Also Jane had different surnames on marriage and baptism Fothrill and Fotral

Had a look Edwards son Alphonse was listed as a baker in a military attestion form as his trade also my great grandad (Peter's son) was a van driver for findlaters is the only place I know he worked. I always heard stories about his horse neddy the horse was taken for use in ww1 and he never got over that

Edward is definitely Peters brother Ive been putting in details on ancestry tree and delighted to find Baldoyle as where Jane is from all I had was she was from Co Dublin.

The only thing anyone knew of Jane was she died in a house fire at Bessbourgh avenue around the 1930's now have her sisters names and where she was from!!

Thanks a million Dathai

Found Ambrose papers it says he died of influenza and he had a GSW to his hand. I had dismissed these records previously because I wasnt 100% sure if he was related to Peter and the form I had seen said he was not likely to become a good offensive soldier so thought that was the end of his army time but they moved him to the medical corps instead!!
