Hi
I am trying to find a parish record for my G grandfather (William Dawson). The problem is I do not know which parish records to search. I believe they lived in the Walkington area of Yorkshire or even Newbold in Yorkshire. Does anyone have any ideas regarding which church they may have registered there Births,Marrages and Deaths?
Kind Regards

Hi and welcome to Rootschat
What year was your great grandfather born
Who did he marry (and when)
If you are trying to find his ancestry (parents/siblings etc) - it's not where he was living but where he was actually born that will be the focus of any search
Have you found the family on any census? If so - can you post full details of the entry

Hi
Thank you for your prompt reply. I do not know where he was born or who he married. All the information I have is my great grandfathers marriage certificate which has William as his father. My great grandfather is listed in the 1841 census as living alone in the Provost Fee of Walkingham,Yorkshire. I do not even have a birth certificate for my great grandfather. Do you think that would of travelled from Walkingham to Leeds or York for a christening or marrage? Is there any parish churches in the Walkingham area rather that the Beverley Minster which seems to be the closest? I just do not know where to start looking.
Kind regards
Rona

A few questions which may hep us find him (some already asked by Carole :)):
William Dawson is named as the father on a marriage certficate. What is the grooms name, age and occupation?
What is William Dawson's occupation?
Where did the couple marry?
Do the witnesses have the surname Dawson, and if so what are their first names?
Can you post the details of your ancestor in the 1841 census? Do you have him in any other census and if so can you post reference numbers if you have them?
I do know that Yorkshire is a big place and that Dawson is a common name in the area, so every little bit of information we can gather, may help us find the right William.
People may have travelled for christening or marriage, though most would probably have kept it local. Marriages usually took place in the bride's parish which could be further afield than where the couple lived.

Hi
Thanks for the reply. The information I have from the Marriage Certificate is as follows:
Grooms name: James Dawson, Widow, Aged 33, Occupation Labourer
Father: William Dawson, Occupation Labourer
James married in the parish of St Marks, Hull
Witnesses: Robert Glossop, Hannah Acey
Regarding the 1841 Census I am not sure what information you require. I have the following details however:
Book 16
Piece 1220
Folio 4
Page 3
If this is wrong information please let me know.
Kind regards

Thanks - that 1841 census info is fine - I will be able to locate him with that. Do you have him in other census?
I am signing off now but will be back later .... :)

Rona, an important thing I forgot to ask:
What date was the marriage?
Who did James marry?
I see he was a widower, do you have details of his first marriage?
-
Looking at James Dawson on the 1841 census, he is 6 years old so likely to be living with the people on the previous page - the Wrede or Wride family ... do you know if James is related to them in any way?
-
On the 1851 there are too many James Walkers born about 1835 for me to guess which may be yours without some more clues.

Hi
James married Mary Ann Bishop on 17th May 1870. This is his second marriage. I am unsure of his first marriage. It may be to Fanny Parker around 1860 but I have no definite confirmation. I am still looking into this possibility.
Thank you for the idea about James living with John and Ann Wrede. I will look into this although the name Wrede has not arisen before.
Thanks

1871 census - with the exception of Ben & the 2 Bishop girls - all other children must be from his first marriage.

Mary A 32 b Keyingham
John 13 b Bentley
William 10 b Hull
Ann 6 ditto
James 4 ditto
Ben 9 Months ditto

It may be to Fanny Parker around 1860 but I have no definite confirmation
There is this death on freebmd
Deaths June qtr 1869
Fanny Dawson aged 31 Sculcoates 9d 98
And this 1861 entry for Walkington but birthplace for James and John does not match to 1871 entry
James Dawson 26 b Newbald agric labourer
Fanny 21 b Bishop Burton
John 1 b Rowley

Hi
Yes I have assumed this is the correct death entry for Fanny Dawson. James remarried in 1870 to Mary Ann Bishop.
The 1861 census again seems to be the correct James Dawson. However the only marriage entry for a James and Fanny states they were married in Great Ouseburn in Yorkshire. This seems quite a distance from Bishops Burton. Regarding John Dawson again no Birth Certificate but Rowley is acceptable as this is near both Bishop Burton, Walkington and Newbold.
Thanks

It would still be worth following up that marriage for a James and Fanny in Great Ouseburn, even if just to eliminate it. Does this fit in time wise to be James's first marriage?
Have you also searched for a marriage between James and Frances?

Have you also searched for a marriage between James and Frances?
The Gt Ouseburn entry shows her as Frances - not Fanny

Hi
Thank you for the idea about James living with another family. I have found that the Wrede's, who lived next to him may be related. Ann Wrede (born 1790)was a Dawson before here marriage. Perhaps his aunt. She has a brother William born 1796. I can find no more information regarding him. Do you know any more?
Many thanks
