Title: David Colville Easson completed
Post by: JCee on Thursday 24 November 11 14:25 GMT (UK)
Looking for information on David Colville Easson. David was born about 1883 in Scotland. Not known when he emigrated. In 1920 he married Ethel Mildred Briggs. Believed to be the widow of John Wm Jaford Briggs. If so there were 3 Briggs children. David died in 1959. No children that I am aware of. Has anyone anything to add?

Jim.

Hi Jim

I'm assuming that you don't have the 1920 marriage cert. for this couple .... but perhaps that you have "inside knowledge" that the Ethel Mildred in question, had children by a prior union ??    ;)

Unfortunately the NZ electoral rolls (which I thought might be of help) don't show any of the BRIGGS children, residing at the same addresses as David and Ethel.

It may not be of great importance, but the Ethel WILEY who married John Wm. Jaford BRIGGS (1902), seems to have been just "Ethel" (i.e.  without a second name. )   She was likely one of the many children born to a Clara and Luther WILEY - her birth being registered in 1882.     [In 1905-06 Ethel and JWJ BRIGGS along with Luther WILEY are all residing at a settlement named Te Kiri, near Hawera in the Taranaki district.]   Sometime later the the WILEY parents moved to the Waikato region, which is nearer to Auckland and the place where David and Ethel Mildred later resided.

It may be of course be that Ethel BRIGGS (bc 1882) and Ethel Mildred BRIGGS (bc 1885), were one in the same, but just thought it worth pointing out the above.  ;)

David died in 1959. No children that I am aware of.

Hi again Jim

I thought the following man looked a likely candidate to be a son of David Colville EASSON  ?   ;)

NZ Death

1989 - EASSON - George Colville - d.o.b.  3 June 1922

This George also lived in Auckland.   He appears in NZ electoral rolls (which can be viewed at An***try) with a lady whom I assume, is his wife.  [No marriage found up to 1956 - so probably after that date.]    I have refrained from adding wife's name in this thread as it appears (from another source) that she is still alive.

Hi Jim,

C.H.Barkers the FD for George Colville EASSON  are no longer in business, they were bought by Sibuns

http://www.fdanz.org.nz/about-fdanz/fdanz-funeral-directors/auckland.aspx

If you decide to email them may I suggest you put "C.H.Barkers records" in the subject line

Hi All,
Thanks for the prolific and speedy response.I will try to work my way through it.

Pastmaster, you were right about the coincidence but DCE circa 1883 died in NZ 1969. His elder bro Robt went to Canada May 1920 with his family including son DCE born 1912. Colville was the maiden name of David and Robert's mother.

For Lucy and Janette. I was given Ethel Mildred as David's wife by another member of family but I need to confirm from him whether it is fact or assumption. Thank you both for the info on George. Neither of us had heard of him. I have e-mailed fdanz in the hope that they will add some more. I will be at the Library on Monday so will check out the An****ry website.
Yours Aye,
Jim.

Hi Jim

Yes, the NZ marriage index shows (1920) that the bride of David Colville EASSON was named Ethel Mildred BRIGGS.
[It is just difficult though for us, working only from indexes, to prove that Ethel Mildred was the same lady as Ethel, widow of John William Jaford BRIGGS. ]   ;)

Hope you have some luck with your follow-ups.   :)

Adding a link to current telephone directories (which cover all New Zealand) which you may find helpful - only a small number of EASSONs listed.

just to add,

I am the other family member who supplied the ethel mildred briggs information.

I can't find my original sources for this info, but i had found it afaicr on a NZ archive website search in september 2010..

DCE NZ married Ethel Mildred Briggs (born in London in 1885) in 1920, Ethel had been divorced the previous year - she had married Herbert Walter Saunders (born Hoo, Kent, England in 1886) in 1910 at Mt Eden, Auckland, NZ. Herbert also remarried in 1920, to Adelaide Edith Baigent.

Ethel died in 1965 (as Ethel Easson, widow) and her ashes were scattered in the same cemetery as DCE.

Herbert died in 1970 and is buried in the same cemetery, his profession is listed as "clerk".

not sure if this helps or further muddies the waters.

thanks.

Hi Gordon

I think it adds clarity.   :)

[I'd been dubious about "Ethel BRIGGS" versus "Ethel Mildred BRIGGS", the (although slight) differences in years of birth ... coupled with the earlier marriage (and divorce) listings for an "Ethel Mildred BRIGGS" - plus a few other finds that didn't quite "stack up" in favour of Ethel (nee WILEY) BRIGGS. ]

Cremation records at the following link, show Mrs Ethel Mildred EASSON aged 80, died on 10 December 1965.
Record available also for David Colville EASSON.

Hi Lucy2 and Janette,
Your pointers to the electoral rolls and the funeral directors came up trumps.
the ER,s gave an elder sister for George living with DCE and Ethel in 1938.(I am assuming GCE was too young to be on the roll.) The FD gave me a date of 1960/61 for the marriage of GCE and the full name and age of his wife. She would be 77 if still alive. There were no other dependants listed.George had WW2 service in the NZ Army.

Thanks again for your help,

Jim.:D
