Hi; I am researching my father, Thomas Kelly. I was born in Forest Gate, London and I believe he moved there from Sunderland prior to that for work, possibly at Fords in Dagenham. I believe he was born around 1928 and that his mothers name might have been Ganley and the family possibly of Irish descent.
I also understand that he had a sister called Alice and a brother called Alf or Alfred.
I have been told that the Irish records office was destroyed by fire around 100 years ago making it difficult to research Irish family history but I am still trying to firm up the Sunderland / London connections.
If this is of any help or if anyone can provide me with further information please get in touch.

there is a birth for a Mary Alice Ganley in Sunderland in 1893....? ;)
-
On 1901 census, 8yr old Mary Ganley was living with her parents, "Bartholmew" age 42 and Alice age 27, and siblings John and Jane (aged 10 and 3) with many other families at 37 George Street, Sunderland. The whole family were born in Sunderland and Bartholmew was an ironworker.
If the Irish connection was with this family, it looks like they left Ireland before about 1860.
Because Kelly is such a common surname, you would probably need to buy the correct wedding cert to be sure of Thomas's father's name, then see if you can find him on the Irish 1911 census (free) or English/Welsh 1911 census (pay to view) and take his story back from there.
If you decide to buy certificates, do so from either the Sunderland Register Office (for these certs) or the GRO www.gro.gov.uk - where they will cost about £9 each and not through organisations you find on the net which will charge you much more

I am also researching a Thomas Kelly (my grandfather) b. 1891 who married Marian (aka Mary) Alice Ganley in 1912. Thomas Kelly b. 1929 was the brother of my mother, Alice b. 1922. The father of Thomas Kelly b. 1891 was John Kelly b. 1853 who married Rachel (?) b.1851. Any info. about my grandfather etc. would be very much appreciated.

Is this the family in 1901 census?

If so:

That looks a really good possibility, thanks. I am using findmypast and I originally found Matthew Kelly's details but the mother's maiden name wasn't shown so I couldn't be absolutely certain. If you have access to mother's maiden names then, if you wouldn't mind, could you see if Matthew's siblings have the same information.
John b. 1888
Rachel b. 31/1/1889
Thomas b. 30/1/1891

Here you are :D

You are a Star! Thank you very, very much for the information. I can now concentrate on why I cannot find John Kelly in the 1891 census whereas the rest of his family are left in a 'doss' house in Unicorn Yard, Stockton-on-Tees :'(

Many thanks for the information candrjm. I have made a note of everything and I will investigate further when I get a copy of the original birth certificate for Thomas Kelly (his son) born 1891 in Sunderland. Interesting that Rachel Cherry may have been married before - I must look further into that.

Hi,
Looks like your John Kelly/Kelly (surname recorded as Kelley) was actually living with Rachel Kelly and the children in Unicorn Yard in 1891, he is recorded on the previous page (at the bottom) (born 1853 Hull Yorkshire Occ: Puddler) so not the one I suggested previously.

I recently found that out as well as I began to concentrate more closely on each of the family members. This is the most confusing part of the family I have come across as two (related) Kellys married two (related) Ganleys. So, when I check in the GRO records I find that there are loads of children with the mother's maiden name being Ganley AND they chose to give some of the children the same forename. ???
