Hi,
we would be very grateful for any links or information re our family .... Sherriff.
Most we know of are based in Rhyl north Wales, but we think we have connections with others in Gloucestershire, south Wales.
Most recent 'link' was my father Sidney William Sherriff, photographer in Rhyl, Korea and WW2 RAC. Son of Sidney Sherriff RSM RWF, India, France, Dunkirk taken POW. My uncles were Alfred, Fred and Donald & aunt Renie - all now gone.
Some distant relationship with RC Sherriff?
Any info appreciated. Thanks.
-
hi,,do you have any years of birth? ;)
-
Hi again. Many thanks.
Sadly only info I have is Sidney William B 1921. D 1984.
-
i cannot see any births for a sydney william sherriff in 1921?
-
Hi,
Sidney Williams death reg gives birth date 1 Jan 1921.
He and his brother Donald Victor seem to have been abroad according to the GRO Army Birth Indices.
Sidney W Sherriff Lucknow 1921 ref 394
Donald Victor Sheriff Multan? 1925 ref 327
No maiden name of mother given .
Best wishes
Cathy
-
Thanks.
That seems to fit well with 'speculation'.
We knew it was India, but not where.
Mother was named Lillian. Sid & Don from second marriage to Sidney who was a soldier. Lillian had been married to a soldier who died in India. her maiden name is unknown, but I now have much more to go on.
Thankyou again.
-
the sydney who was a soldier in india,,,,,there is a record of a sidney h sherriff of the gloucester regiment,,,,ring any bells?
-
Hi.
We have no idea of Sidney 'senior's' middle name. But, so far as we know he was staunch RWF from WW1 (sgt) to his D in 1954.
Reckon H must be from a different Sherriff line.
My grandfather's Army no was 4179131
Thanks again.
-
there is a marriage in west hackney parish church in 1919
sydney sherriff bachelor age 23 a soldier 15 shakespeare rd father william a baker
lily smith age 30 a widow 20 imperial avenue, victoria park father william huslin? a carman
could this be lillian who was widowed? ;)
-
Cannot find an emoticon for jaw dropping! :-)
Lilly Huslin married to a Smith = sons Fred & Alfred Smith = my father's older 'step' brothers.
Lilly came (we are told) from Huguenot stock -- where the lilly is their religious symbol (later Maltese Cross). Grandfather was a silversmith.
My grandfather enlisted in Highbury WW1 and we believe lived there. It seriously looks like you have opened up a new parallel line of Sherriffs - probably relating to GG Grandfather's brother's line.
Mega thanks. I will ask around the family to see what I can enhance.
-
hi,,i had put william as marrying lily,,,it was sidney,,,i have edited my post,,,,,, ;)
-
Hi,
Many thanks. Now it all really fits together! One family line (we know of) 5 brothers in all. Fitting a photo of 4 estimated to be 1919 with their father.
Thanks again :)
Andy

Yes I have information and living relatives please blog me back or email (*)
My grandmother was Alice Jane Sherriff, lived at 15 Shakespear Road, and was the only sister to Sydney Sherriff. We have letters written by Sydney while he was a prisoner of war at Stalag 8B.
My mother Joyce, Alice Jane's daughter, who turned 85 last week, is very keen to be in touch as she has many stories and information as well as memories to share with you.
I look forward to speaking to you soon.
Kind Regards,
Jane

Dear Kiteflyer,
We may well be related, Aunt Alice you mention may well have been my grandmother.
Do you remember any other names and who was it that visited Petherton Road.
Many thanks,
Jane Baker
-
Hello Janey.
My Dad was Alice's brother Thomas ,Mum was Florence (Floss)and my sister Jean and I (Ted) used to go with them to see Aunt Alice at 100 Petherton Rd,
Names that I recall were Joan and Joyce, Family name of Weed.
When we were young ,we lived at Hornsey Rise N.19 and Dad was a Postman.
I have an old photo of Tom,Sid,Alice and Annie Parrish taken around 1904 which I am working on at the present time.
Regards, Ted.

Hi Everyone.
My thanks to the Moderators for deleting email addresses & keeping us secure. ;)
And, my huge apologies for not keeping in touch. Its been a hectic and at times difficult few months + major pc crash + lost logons etc. I was'nt ignoring people. But still sorry.
Janey, Many thanks for the email, I will reply ASAP.
Hi Ted, great to hear from you. its amazing how we are all linking together. As soon as you are able to PM me, & can therefore give me your email (securely), I will send you a document outliming all I know about Sidney. His wife was Lilly - from Hoxton - a milliner and descended from Heuganots - but that is much of what I know about her - apart from very helpful additional info from people on this forum.
Sidney had 2 sons - Sidney (my father) and Donald .... + 2 from Lilly's first marriage - Fred, Alfred +Renie her daughter -- all originally surnamed Smith. All are now deceased.
Of interest might be your searching Google for "RSM Sherriff Lamsdorf". After placing a few bits of information on various sites, other people have added even more info. OK this is just re the RSM, but hopefully some links may arise.
Just before his death, myslef & our daughter visited the camp band leader Jimmy Howe. A fascinating guy. Much on the web about him too.
All the best for the time being, Andy.
-
Hi, Janey and Longbow.
Thanks for your replies. I thought you might like to see this photo named on the back,as Tom,Sid, Alice and Annie Parrish. Taken aprox. 1905. My guess is that Tom is at the back, next to Annie Parrish.
Janey,I will phone you soon.
Regards to both. Ted.
-
Dear Janey and Andy(Longbow)
Attached photo is of William Sherriff and sons. I believe that Thomas is back left and Sid is back right. Is this the same one that you have? Andy. There is a private message left for you,Andy.
Take care,both. Ted.
-
Thanks Ted :-)
I have a copy of that one too.
Have replied to your PM.
Andy.

I realise that this thread is now several years old but I'm hoping that some of those who have been participating are still keeping tabs on it.
I am also descended from the same Sherriff family - my grandfather, Henry, is the brother standing between Tom and Sid in the photo which Kiteflyer posted!
I have a copy of this photo too (although not in such good condition!), it was given to me by my second cousin Fred who is the grandson of the fourth brother, Bill, who is sitting alongside father William in the photo.
There were two other brothers, by the way, who aren't in the photo - Arthur (Art) and Herbert (Bert).
Keeping my fingers crossed that the rest of the Sherriff clan are still reading this!
Chris
