I have a death cert for Timothy Sexton and then a word below the name which I cannot read. Can anybody help please.

From what I can see, it looks like the first letter is 'B' and the last few are 'stown'. It could be that they have added on the locality of the place he came from, for some reason, maybe to differentiate him from somebody else of the same name. There is a place called 'Barriestown' not far from Cork, in County Wexford, which is the only one I have been able to find on a quick search.
It might help if you did another scan of this so that you can read it without having to twist sideways. :)

I think it might say Bishopstown with top of 'h' missing. Bishopstown is south city.

Thanks for replies. Here is the image turned.

I agree with Sonas;, I didn't know of Bishopstown, but think it might be a very good candidate.

Thanks again. I was just surprised that they put a place name in the name/surname box. I am not sure if it was the place of residence before entering the workhouse or place of birth.

I've seen this on a few certs relating to deaths in a hospital or workhouse.. it's the last place of residence.

Bishopstown it is. It's now a large suburb on the western side of the city. Back in 1899 it would have been very rural & mostly farmland. I'd guess he was employed on one of the local farms. I grew up in Bishopstown and never heard of a hospital or workhouse in the area. The workhouse was in Douglas.
Edit: I've just seen that the cert was signed by the Occupier at the Workhouse, he obviously died there but must have lived in Bishopstown before that.

Cork Archives, Blackpool has a lot of records for the workhouse

Hi,
Did you look at the census for 1901. There are two entries for Sexton Bishopstown.
1 Cornelius age 30 labourer, wife Margaret age 30 . son Timothy age 7, James aged 4,& Ellen 0, They lived at house no 14 Ballinaspigbeg, Bishopstown.
2 Timothy Sexton servant, Huggarsland, Bishopstown.
Both Ballinaspigbeg and Huggardsland ( correct spelling) are close to each other.
As Agho said Bishopstown is now a built up suburb of Cork City although in 1899 it would have been a very rural area.

Thanks Agho. I did contact the archivist at Cork archives some days ago and waiting for a reply.
Good thinking Mary. That could well be him but it starts to look like this Timothy Sexton is not my man. I am having great difficulty finding either a birth or death record, but have all details in between, i.e his marriage, the birth of 6 children.
The birth would be in parish registers and there is no obvious candidate. I have ordered most possible death certs hoping to get his age of birth, but so far without success. Will keep trying.

I would have thought Cornelius and Timothy would more than likely be his sons if
he died in 1899 and these lads are on the 1901 census two years later. Also the fact that the christian name Timothy is common to all.

Yes but it is the wrong Timothy. My Timothy had 6 children
Catherine, Julia, Johanna, Patrick, Daniel, and Cornelius.
Julia was my grandmother. Johanna died at a young age and all the others emmigrated to New York City. I have all these records.
I just cannot find the birth or death of my Tiimothy Sexton b in Lislevane. He married Ellen Donovan in 1862.
