Hello,
My first ever post!!! Took me a long time to find this page and hope I will be able to find any replies! If I am lucky enough to get some! :D
My request for assistance is for a friend Albert Snow whose father Walter Snow left the marriage when Albert was a baby. It has been very difficult finding anything that makes sense but we are thinking that Walter Snow who died in Hamilton, ON, Canada on 28 Nov 1971, may have been born in Leicester about 1903 to another Walter Snow and unknown mother's name.
This is a bit of a stretch from the 1911 Census of Canada and have no real proof so am wondering if there might be some parish records for us to check without having to pay a professional?
Thanks for any help.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat
There are 2 births in Leicester on freebmd
Births September qtr 1901
Walter Snow Leicester 7a 206
Births September qtr 1904
Walter Edward Snow Leicester 7a 229
Can you rule out the Walter Edward?
This is the only Walter Snow marriage in Leicester
Marriages June qtr 1904
Walter Snow Leicester 7a 547 to either Kate Pick or Matilda Deborah Mudford

The free 1911 index has a 9yr old Walter Snow living in Leics but if you have a Walter Snow on the Canadian 1911 - it can't be this one
Manipulation of the 1911 index shows likely parents as Walter and Amelia

Hi and welcome to Rootschat, just in case these are your Snow's:-
On the 27th August 1909 a "Mrs" Snow aged 30 departed Liverpool for Quebec on the Empress of Britain with a Walter Snow aged 4 and a George Snow aged 2

Thanks so much. I was aware of the passenger list and it makes sense that these are the Snow's on the 1911 Census in Brantford, ON. Our problem is connecting the Walter Snow from there to Albert. The funeral home is throwing us off because they have a birthdate of 12 Aug 1905. So either Walter Snow wanted to shave a couple of years off his age for some reason or he just didn't know. And unfortunatley we don't know from the census if it actually was a Leicester birth. My reason for looking that way was because the elder Walter on the Brantford census, joined the Canadian Army and the paper shows his birthplace as Leicester. I have searched long and hard and there are no other records of Walter Snow's in Canada with a father named Walter. Or even any born about 1903-5 for that matter!
-
This entry fits with the date of birth August 1905 - Blaby is in Leics but no middle name
Births September qtr 1905
Walter Snow Blaby 7a 30
It wasn't found earlier as you said birthyear was around 1903 so I only searched 1901-1904
may have been born in Leicester about 1903
-
Thanks again. Is there any way of finding out if the Blaby birth is from the elder Walter and Matilda Mudford?

There is no online baptism and no 1911 entry so the only way seems to be by purchasing the birth cert
The 1904 marriage has 2 possible spouses. Can we have the 1911 census details please - presumably it shows a mothers christian name?
-
There is not a maiden name on the Census. It shows the following:
Snow, Walter, male, Head, married, birth Apr 1875, age 36, birthplace England, profession laborer;
Snow, Matilda, female, Wife, married, birth Feb 1881, age 30, birthplace England;
Snow, Walter, male, Son, single, birth Aug 1903, age 7, birthplace England; Snow, George, male, Son, single, birth Jul 1906, age 4, birthplace England; Snow, Beatrice, female, Dau, single, birth Aug 1910, 10/12 mos., birthplace Ontario.
The immigration list (1909) of shows the destination as Brantford for Matilda, Walter and George. The senior Walter must have already been there.

Births September qtr 1906
George William Snow Leicester 7a 299
In the absence of any other Walter Snow marriages to a Matilda - I would say it's the 1904 one
Births June qtr 1881
Matilda Deborah Mudford Leicester 7a 212

Thank you for the help. Still not sure of this being the right family for my buddy's father, but are thinking it is likely, as there just are not many Walter Snow's in Canada, anywhere.

Hello Richard,
Thanks very much for the note about Walter and your Vera Snow. I think you are right that this eliminates them as the family I am looking for but I would be pleased to hear a few more details if you know, why they went back to England. I still am not too sure of how to respond on the chat page, so if you don't mind, please e-mail at (*) Thank you. Alan

Hello Alan, this is Patricia. I am using my son Richard's account. My email address is (*)
My grandfather Walter Snow was married to Matilda Deborah Mudford. They both moved to Canada in the early 1900s with their son Walter Edward. I'm not sure if George William was born in Canada or England, but I know that when they were in Canada Matilda had a daughter Beatrice who died in Canada. When they came back here Vera Ida Snow my mother was born. Matilda's mother was Lucy Stretton (married name Mudford) and she had 14 children several of whom died at an early age. One son, William, was lost during the first world war on the Good Hope.
My daughter has a photograph of Lucy and several children and I'll try to get it scanned.
My grandfather Walter died in the General Hospital in Leicester in 1926.
Regards - Patricia
