My g-g-grandfather James Knox was a postman who later became Overseer of the LPSGPO. Thanks to a newspaper article written on the occasion of his retirement from the Post Office, I know everything about him, except for his parentage and death!
James was born 1864/1865 and lists his birthplace as Mile End. I traced him to January-March Quarter 1865, but tragically, there are two of them! and the only information I can find relates to the wrong one! I have his appointment book for when he became a postman in 1881, but I have no census information for him until 1891 (Bethnal Green) when he is married to Eliza Cofield (married in Sain Thomas Harbour Square in Stepney 1883) producing lots of children (9). He was in Walthamstow in 1901 and 1911 (50 Hatherley Road). James later retired to Canvey Island.
Any assistance would be wonderful.

It's great that you're both trying - my grandmother is a Knox and 93 and still going strong and she'd love to find out where the Knox's came from.
So all I know is that his father was also called James Knox. I tried looking for death records but came up blank on both James and his father James.
If any descendants of James would like to contact me, the newspaper article about James and Eliza is a classic.

There are a couple of possible deaths for James.
James Knox 1924 (vol 4a 509) Rochford Essex aged 60
James Knox 1940 (vol 4a 1622) aged 75
Canvey Island was included in Rochford registration area.

I'm not sure we have the correct marriage?
If your grandmother is 93, then she was born around 1918?
There are no Knox births, with a mother's maiden name of Cofield in or around 1918? ???
Do you know the names of your grandmother's parents?
-
No - sorry to confuse you. James Knox, "postman Knox", had a son called George William Knox, who had a daughter in 1919 - my grandmother. I merely said that she was interested in finding her Knox ancestry before she shuffles off this mortal coil.
I know all of my grandmother's tree except James Knox's parentage. I know his father was called James Knox too and that he was dead by 1883, but that's all.

Thanks Sharon, That 1940 one looks perfect - the newspaper article about James and Eliza was on the occasion of their Golden Wedding in 1933 so that eliminates the earlier one.
Thanks for providing the Rochford detail. I'll see if I can find a death certificate.
Jeff
