Title: Cannot access the IGI website
Post by: Your Tree Searcher on Sunday 20 November 11 21:03 GMT (UK)
I have been trying for two days to access the IGI. All other websites OK.

Have tried Firefox and Explorer. No luck with either

Is the site down?

Any help that anyone can offer would be appreciated.

Thanks

Your Tree Searcher.

thanks gnu, at least I know it's not their end. Also thanks for the links. I have clicked on both and the little circle just goes round and round and will not connect. Just tried Ebay that is the same. Very strange, as I have used both many times. All other websites loading ok except these two.

Thanks again for checking

I am back again as I still cannot gain access to the IGI or Ebay. No problem with any other site I have accessed.

I tried clicking on the links kindly supplied bygnu.  I have tried difference browers. Still no luck. Must be my computer. As not a technical person has anyone got any suggestions please?

Thank you very much.

Hi YTS

What operating sytem are you using - XP, Vista or Win7 -  and antivirus are you using?

Also, it could be that you need to clear the cache.

If I access the search on the IGI website I get a 'Site Maintenance In Progress' message - so I think at least part of the issue may be at that end.

Both sites are still working fine for me. So I don't think it's the site unless it's a location problem. YTS doesn't show where she is so* can't tell if that might be an issue. Unusual though for familysearch  :-\

*looks like Staffordshire so I don't think that's the problem

The FamilySearch website has various mirrors - not everyone communicates with the same server. The main IGI page loads ok for me - I only get the message when I try a search

That's what I was wondering - if it was the way the connections (packets - ? ) were being sent and received.  I can get all the searches back, no problem.

Also, note that YTS also had problems with ebay (Reply #2) and she can't even get the search page up,  so not sure that it is that.

My grateful thanks again to gnu, also to Shane.

I am on windows 7, AVG antivirus, have cleared cache and still cannot connect.

I have tried Google Chrome, Firefox and Windows. Nothing works.

I keyed into google search box either ebay or igi. The relevant sites come up as usual.  So far OK. Click on Ebay, nothing. The green bar goes across the bottom of the screen and nothing happens. Just leaves me on the the Google page.

The IGI is the same. It does not try to connect, so do not get as far as site maintenance notice. Like Ebay the green bar goes across quickly at the bottom but does not take me to the site.

It  must be something on my computer. I am not technical enough to know what

Thank you very much

Strange that it only happens to just these two websites... especially since it effects different browsers - wonder if it's something to do with a Firewall incorrectly blocking something ?

Were there any Windows or Security System (McAfee, Norton, AVG etc) updates around the time this started to happen ?

I had intermittent problems yesterday afternoon. Some searches fine, but occasionally got a message to try again later. I put it down to increased traffic on a cold Sunday afternoon.

I do not recall any updates Shane on Saturday.

Hi Lizzie, wish I could get as far as the try again message. Cannot go past the google page with the link on.

Not that I think it will make things better, but will go and update AVG in a moment.

Thanks once again

Hi

I don't know if this is connected to the problem but I have been trying to search the IGI by batch number and for the last 2 days it comes up with a message  -
" We are unable to display search results due to technical difficulties. Please try searching:again in a few minutes"

The old site and the new version seem to work fine but I was trying to save trawling through pages of results and it no longer works for me.

Hi Charlotte, thanks for the message. I cannot get that far I'm afraid. Just click on web address in Google and nothing.

A bit fed up now.

A thought -

Bring up Window Task manager  (In Win 7 - Ctrl Alt Del and select Task Manager from the list that appears ) and check what processes are using up CPU when you try to connect to those sites.  I'm wondering if it's AVG  :-\

Make a list and Google them to see what they are.

Hi YTS

This might be a silly suggestion but are you trying to access the IGI from a Bookmark?  I have had a problem before with  bookmarked sites, some work and others will just hang unless you click refresh or go to the home page.

Thank you Shane. That's a great site. I will keep that in mind.

Gnu, have checked Task Master. Thanks again. Just explorer and email programme showing.

I was using a bookmark for Ebay but not the IGI. For both sites I have now keyed in to Google or other browers the name. The list always comes up. Then nothing.

Many thanks to all again

Gnu, have checked Task Master. Thanks again. Just explorer and email programme showing.

YTS,  those are under Applications.  The Processes are accessed via the Processes Tab.  This will have a long list of individual programs that are running and should also show you their individual CPU usage.

Did you check them when you were trying to use the IGI - that should show you which processes are using up CPU/Memory.

Post by: Your Tree Searcher on Monday 21 November 11 20:01 GMT (UK)
not sure if this is relevant

in the list iexplor.exe is listed twice = this highest number in the list

at the bottom it says cpu usage moves from 0% to 2%

physical memory 34%

this is another language to me, sorry ???

tried to load igi, but no again

Post by: Gadget on Monday 21 November 11 20:07 GMT (UK)
Just checked mine with IE (usually use FF) - I get it listed twice too so it's not that. I was thinking that it was one of the AVG routines that might have taken a dislike to those two sites and it would have showed up when you tried to access either of them  :-\

Not sure what else it can be  :(

Hi

One last try - I Googled  can't access a particular website  :-X

Here are a few explanations - I can't vouch for any of the solutions but they might help.

Have been in the same boat as Tree Searcher and others since early Sunday morning. Trying to access any of the IGI sites (Old FamilySearch, New FamilySearch and Hugh Wallis' IGI Batch) produces the following message "Internet Explorer unable to display Web page" (after a long wait).

So, clicked on "Diagnose Connection Problems" and "Windows Networks Diagnostics" Box appears with the message
"Cannot communicate with new.familysearch.org (nnn.n.nnn.nnn - the IP address)
"Network Diagnostics pinged the remote host but did not receive a response"
"Reset the Network Adapter 'Wireless Network Connection'"
"Resetting the adapter can sometimes resolve an intermittent problem"

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?

Gnu, you are a genius.

One of the websites you sent said turn off router and turn on again. That is such a simple thing, why did I not think of that? Well because I could access all other sites.

It worked!

Wow -wonderful. Feel much better now

hanes teulu - seems I have cracked it. Thank you for your message. What a nuisance. All ok now though

YTS -have a nice evening both and all others who have helped along the  way

Glad it's sorted - I'll remember that if I ever find myself in that situation!

My next suggestion was to swear at it in Welsh  ;D ;D ;D

Your Tree Searcher,

One question left - why you and me? What did WE do to deserve this?

hi Charlotte, this is in reply to some earlier posts you made. you might already know this but here goes; The New Ferry wasnt known as such to the locals, it was simply The Ferry, The New Ferry was a name given to a different area, my uncle Pat Graffin moved from The Ferry to New Ferry. There WAS a photo of The Ferry, labelled  'New Ferry' on the wall of Ulster Folk And Transport Museum in the Transport section but i believe its now gone, it showed a scene of the 'street' from just off the main road. I visited the area when i was young with my mother Winifred McCloskey [nee Graffin] and Uncle Pat used to take us out onto River Bann on a boat. Another coincidence is my mother who died in 1985 is buried in Crebiily Cemetry, as is her sister Rosemary McGarry [nee Graffin]. Dont know if this is of any help to you, take care..................
