Title: Lyons/O'Neill - Wexford/Ballyhack
Post by: mandypea on Thursday 26 May 11 08:58 BST (UK)
I have John(Jack) Lyons(1887) and Margaret O'Neill(1888), they were married circa 1907. Lived in Rylands (near Bunclody (Newtownbarry)), Wexford in 1911, with their firstborn Ellen age 10months.
John Lyons parents may have been Matthew and Ellen (these are also the names of their first two children) (info on 1901 census)
As for Margaret O'Neill there is little or no information about her, where born? who were her parents? Living family tell me that they weren't ones for registering births?! (only baptism lines) so maybe its something their parents did too? But there should be a marriage for them somewhere, my problem is I don't know if they even married in Wexford, - Dublin and Gorey have been mentioned but not sure if it is related to Margaret so thats not much help!

the 1911 census does state that Margaret was born in County Wexford.

I have still got no further with Lyons/ O'Neill, although I do believe that Matthew and Ellen Lyons are John Lyons parents. Someone in Ireland who has been helping me has found it difficult to find any records for them.... I have a [possible] Margaret O'Neill age 12 in 1901, parents John O'Neill[1857] and Margaret[1858] at Rathturtin, Clonroche.
I also have a possible marriage record for Margaret O'Neill in 1907, Enniscorthy, but no matching record for John Lyons

Looking for Margaret O'Neill(1888), just found out she came from Ballyhack, she had a  brother Joe (died in the war) and younger brother Jack, and a a sister called May - has anyone any info on the O'Neill families from that area, please?

Have you checked 1901 and 1911 census records yet? If so, it helps if you post the link to save others from searching for the same information. If not, have a look to get a better idea of ages, etc.

Hi, yes I have checked the census - I have found one but there is no Joe on it, he may be away from home?? I'm hoping there might be someone who is researching the O'Neills on here?

I don't have a marriage cert - can find no record of it, so I don't know where she married or her fathers name...she married John (Jack) Lyons in 1907 (re 1911 census) and then she lived in Bunclody, Co Wexford. (my gt grandparents)

just spotted your recent Lyons/O'Neill thread... how did you manage you work out a possible connection to Ballyhack ?  [Topics Now Merged]

Ballyhack town is quite small and there are only a couple of O'Neill households in the area..

Link to the household on the 1911 census for reference

Hi, a few days ago (via Ancestry) I found a cousin who my gt grandmother brought up after the cousins mother died, she gave me the info that my grandmother came from 'Ballyhack, nr Wexford' and she also gave me the names of my gt grandmothers siblings. I had never heard of Ballyhack before yesterday

...
came from 'Ballyhack, nr Wexford'
....

the nearest big town to Ballyhack would be New Ross - about 20km. Wexford town is about 40km to the east.

Sorry this is 12 years late, but I'm the great Grandson of Jack and Margaret! My Mother is Mary (born 1953) daughter of Kathleen Patricia Lyons (my Nan). I'm happy to answer any questions you have, to the best of my ability. Please don't hesitate to reach out

Found this post via Google - luckily not another 12 years later! I believe I'm the great great Grandson of Patrick and Jane who may be relations of John and Margaret. (I think John was Patrick's older brother.) I'm in the UK and trying to piece together this huge family is very difficult - be glad for any help!

Hi mate, nice to meet ya haha, I'm not sure what kind of Cousins that makes us, Margaret and John Lyons are my Great Grandparents, my grandmother is Kathleen. She came to England in 1948, to permenantly move over a year or so later with her my Grandfather, where she ended up working in London as an au pair. She was the Youngest of 12 children born to John and Margaret, which, I gather is how we're a generation apart. My Father was also an Irishman, and was from Limerick, and came over to the UK (Scotland initially) roughly in the 60s, before moving to England and meeting my mother, Mary. He only met my grandmother a few times, as he passed away from some complications of Cancer treatment when I was 5. They used to speak Gaelige together on the few occasions they met, which would've been interesting with the slight dialect differences between Leinster and Munster.

Nan's still with us, in her 90s now, in a nursing home in Buckinghamshire, due to dementia, primarily affecting her brain's motorcentre. That's about all I can fit on here but if you want to know more I'm more than happy to add you on social media, I'd love to hear about your side of things as well 😊
