I'm looking at a Cunneff family that came to Bacup, Lancashire between 1841 and 1849.
James the father was b. c1800 in Ireland.
He was a soldier (probably in Ireland). Any help on that aspect would be most helpful.
His two sons (John b. c1837 and James b. c1839) were married in Bacup.
James was born in Galway.
John was married to Catherine Doran and James to Sarah Atkinson.
I'm more uncertain of the two girls.
Bridget (b.c1829) married John Hargreaves. Ann (b. c1832) married James Butterworth.

Do you think that there might be a connection between your
Cunneff/Cunniff/Cunliffe and the McNiffe surname which I have in my tree ?
My McNiffes came from County Sligo and settled in County Galway.

I'm no expert on Irish surnames so I should not comment.
I've not come across the McNiffe name at all, let alone in connection withe Cunneff/Cunliffe line.

Have a look at http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/index
and type in each of your surnames individually.
Bear in mind that people sometimes changed their surnames ... just to make our research
slightly more difficult !

Came across a small church and graveyard, (while 'lost'!!) driving around, named Meelick.
It's on the Galway-Offaly border, 7 miles outside Banagher (Offaly)
One headstone with the below;
Thomas Cuniffe; 4/2/1940
wife-Annie; 17/7/1929
dtr-Bertha; 18/1/1971
dtr-Harriet Staunton; 6/11/1954
