Hi Paz

Can't really see a possible birth entry for Sidney (searching as a S*dn Abra*)  up to 1910 on the pay to view site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

What makes you think that he may have been born in Scotland?

Hi MonicaL

This info is for a friend, who lived in S.Rhodesia - as it was then,  who was orphaned at 8 yrs old and knows nothing about her father.   She isn't sure where he was born but had a vague idea it might be Scotland.   Thanks for your interest.

Hi Flattybasher9,

Where can I find this info.   I've looked on Ancestry.com but there are 38000+ names!!, most of them in the US.   And again, thanks for your interest.

Paz

Incidentally, her mother's name was Emma Charlotte Canham and she believes that she was a Sussex girl.   I have found her brother, Sidney Canham Abrams.   He died in Swindon, Wilts in, 1992.   She also has another brother, Bruce Walter Abrams.   Grateful for any info.

Hi Paz

Likely as you think the connections may not be in Scotland.

The databases to look at for possible BMDs are either:

www.freebmd.org.uk - this database is as a result of a very successful transcription programme. I am not sure what year they are up to on transcribing records and this may also vary by county team.

www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx - these are the General Register Office (GRO) indexes comprising of two databases (subject to years).

Paz, Sidney and Emma didn't marry in the UK? Can't see an entry on the indexes for a marriage here which is a pity.

I realist that, but there is the PM option. I have managed to get links to the two "Sidneys", but nothing else. I am still fishing for "anything else".

Hi Paz

Under each other names on the l/h side of your posts, you will find a small green scroll. If you click on this, it will take you through to the Personal Message service (PMs), see here www.rootschat.com/help/pms.php

The PM service is a good way to exchange personal emails as these are not encouraged on the main open forum to protect people from email abuse such as spam etc.

I'm sorry it's taken me so long to reply but I have only just been able to contact my friend again.   Her name is Anita Eve Abrams (Patmore).   However, she was born in S.Rhodesia and was married there so I doubt there will be any records containing information about her.   Incidentally, I have now been able to find info regarding her brother, Sidney.   He was actually using his mother's name and so was known as Sidney Canham Abrams.  now there only remains to find her other brother, Bruce Walter.

Can you advise me about any good African genealogical sites?

Regards,

Paz

Hi Paz

There is a death showing in South Glamorgan for a Bruce ABRAMMS (birth 23 Aug 1925) in Dec. 1990. Not sure on this as we don't know birth year for Bruce Walter Abramms.

Re South Africa, might be worth looking at board here www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,291.0.html

Hi Paz,
Got a letter yesterday from my sister, also a friend of Anita's, asking me to try to help trace Sidney & wife Emma.
Cannot find the surname CANTHAM in FreeBMD (England & Wales) & no Emma Charlotte CANHAM born in England or Wales between 1890 & 1920.
Similar outcome so far for Sidney Frederick ABRAMS.

Hi All

I think, given we have established that there are no likely Scottish connections, this post would be best placed on the general England board. I am going to move it now to that board so hopefully other people may be able to help.

Monica

PS. Baz, welcome to Rootschat  :)

This one has turned really weird. When I first started, I found 5 births circa 1900, one of them being found in Wiltshire dated for 1902. The month date of that one has changed and the middle name has gone.
1952, Sidney F. Abrams marries a Boddy or Rowe at Paddington.
Then I find in the London phone book 1953 through to 1967, Sidney F Abrams, 13 Fairfield Drive, Perivale, London.
Sidney Cantham Adams left Durban, South Africa and arrived at Southampton 7th January 1955.
London Solicitors advertisement for Sidney Cantham Adams to contact them in 1968.
Loads of strange dead ends on this one.

Hi everybody,

Here's an update on what I have found out.  Sidney Frederick (now calling himself Sidney Canham Abrams) died in 1991 in Melksham, Wilts.   It seems, therefore, that there was a Wiltshire connection.   At Monica's suggestion I contacted a Zambian (former S.Rhodesia) site because had Anita told me that her parents had died in 1947 and were buried in Bulawayo.   I scoured lists of burials  in 33 cemeteries but couldn't find them.   However, I have been contacted by a lady who feels that  she and Anita may be related and who has suggested that Anita's mother was born in Taung.   Anita's granddaughter will be following all this up when next she comes to visit.

Bruce Walter Abrams was born in 1932.

Many thanks to you all for your efforts.

I am the sister of Sidney Frederick Abrams.I should like to thank you for the information you have given me.One point I found very confusing is the name Sidney Cantham as my mothers name has been wrongly spelt and of course Adams was not his correct surname. He would surely have had to produce correct identification although 1955 would have been around about the time he left South Africa. Thanks again for all your trouble.Regards
