Trying to locate any information on "Herbert Allan" who had some connection to Allans music in Victoria,Aust. He was my step grandfather.I have Also tried to find his old address in Mount Eliza without success.
I remember going to this very grand house when I was very young and would dearly love to visit "or even google earth" the address again, and/or get any information on his family or details of the marriage to my Grandmother Gladys Christine Kent (nee Hooton). Herbert and Gladys would have been married in Victoria sometime after 1935 and prior to 1965.
Any help no matter how small will be a great help,Many thanks to all.

No, I live in Sydney, dont know anything about Victoria suburbs but I have just been looking at this site
http://www.deceasedsearch.com/index.php for Springfield Botanical Cemetery
and on their "search" there are a Herbert Alfred and Gladys Christine Allen
I read Enquiries on Rootschat and have picked up a few clues and have a go at trying to help out, have you looked at TROVE ? maybe there are clues there that you could follow up,
All the best

The suburb would be Balwyn North, I think (there is a street view on Googlemap). It was reasonably common for people to have holiday houses on the Mornington peninsula so perhaps the Balwyn address was their permanent residence.
I have been doing some work on obituaries and come across these but just at present I can't tie them directly to Herbert. The ALLAN family is spelt slightly differently to the records found above. (ALLEN)
ALLAN, George Leavis has an entry in Australian Dictionary of Biography – one of the founders of the firm Allan & Co music publishers and music stores
http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/allan-george-leavis-2875 .
Obit for George Leavis ALLAN

Some of the sons of George Leavis ALLAN:

Thanks Genni,
Didn't know any of that so it all ads to the picture, thank you so much.Just spoke to a family member who said that as well as this house in Balwyn they also owned the "elusive one" in Mt Eliza but unfortunately could not remember where it was.
Maybe if I contacted the Mornington shire they might have some old records..

Thanks all so very much, I will delve into the web pages supplied by you all and see how I go.However just thought I would mention that the property in Mt Eliza was more than a holiday house, it was one of many he owned and
these premises were on many acres and had a full time gatekeeper living in a cottage at the front gates.

Hi
I actually live on the Mornington Peninsula, leave it with me for a couple of days. I'll check the old rate books in the Library, see what I come up with.
Can tell you though
1914 Electoral Roll
The following people are living at 31 Colebrooks Street, Brunswick
Alfred James - Builder
Herbert Alfred - Warehouseman
Percy Ameil - Builder
Sophia Ida - Home Duties
As to Herbert & Gladys' marriage narrowed down the time frame.
Gladys Christine Kent was living at 226 Dandenong Rd, St Kilda between 1943 and 1954. Her occupation was listed as Traveller!
Are you sure the house in Mt Eliza belonged to the Allen's?

Apologies to all,The surname I should be chasing is "ALLEN,Herbert Alfred" not "Allan" I was always led to believe that he owned Allan's music so this is why I misspelt it.
Now I am wondering if this was another tale told to me by my parents when I was young, like the one about my dad riding the Kangaroo's at Riponlea house. All other details are correct though so I will keep hunting for info on the
Allen family and his prop in Mt Eliza. Now all the more interesting because I'm curious as to how he made his fortune if not through music and theatre ownership.
Thanks to all and hope that I haven't caused to much inconvenience.

Hi Genni,
Sorry I misspell the surname but I am sure the property in Mt Eliza did belong to Herbert Allen,I recall there were lengthy discussions about my parents taking over the gatekeepers house
located on the property.

Hi again
Found a reference to Mt Eliza.
Percy Ameil(Amiel) ALLEN resided at Tower Rd, Mt Eliza between 1937 and 1963 according to the electoral rolls.
He was an architect.
He died in Mt Eliza in 1966 (Reg: 19514) aged 81.
Also Alfred James ALLEN died in N Brunswick 1938 aged 81. (parents: William & Esther E (Unknown) According to his marriage to Sophia he was born in St Kilda.
Herbert's 1st wife (Eleah Minnie) died in 1957, so that narrows the Marriage time frame even further.

Thanks Genni,
boy that jolted the old memory, yep, Percy Allen!! May have been the brother of Herbert?Sorry for being all over the place with this but will now need to get details on Percy and see just where Herbert fits in.
Cant thank you enough, I would never have remembered that.

Hi Genni,
sorry to bother you again, did you happen to know the number of the property on Tower Road?
Crankyvet.
-
Sorry, no number, probably wouldn't have been back then, more than likely owned a whole section. I'll check the rate books on Wednesday at the Library.
Percy was Herberts older brother, they appear to be the only children of Alfred & Sophia to have survived infancy.
Hebert Also served WW1 and his occupation was listed as commercial Traveller.
Googling his name came up with the following at the PROV.
Litigation Files (sample only retianed) - don't know what that meants
233/1967
Estate of Herbert Alfred Allen Gladys Christine Allen and Equity Trustees Vo
VPRS 8664 P0003 4
So there might be a will you could check out at the PROV.
Cheers

Thanks so much for all your help on this one Genni all the info was a big help to me. FYI I think they (poss Percy Allen)also owned a house in Heidelberg. It was called "Banyule" from memory.(now a suburb I believe)
I can only ever recall going there once or twice as a child but do remember going back in the late 70's to have a sticky and was sad to see all the changes that had been made. The land was all subdivided and the house had been purchased by the Victorian art gallery from memory. Access was extremely limited at the time and staff were not very helpful. Ah progress eh!, a sad thing sometimes..
