My earliest Baillie is John Baillie, b. circa 1740, m. Mary Lowden 6 March 1762 in Bothwell. Their son William Baillie was born in New Monkland circa 1782 but I can't find his birth anywhere, nor can I find any more information on his parents or presumed siblings.
William Baillie married Margaret Downs in 1812 in New Monkland. Margaret was born 16 August 1794, to Archibald Downs and Jean Thomson, who were married 1791 in New Monkland.
Archibald Downs was born circa 1766 Lanarkshire (again, no birth found) and Jean Thomson was born in New Monkland to John Thomson and Mary Inglis in 1769.
Archibald Downs and Jean Thomson had the following family:
Margaret, b. 1794, m. William Baillie
Andrew, b. 1796, m. Catherine Crawford?
Archibald, b. 1798
John, b. 1799, m. Janet Henry
Alexander, b. 1802, m. Christian Anderson
James, b. 1804, m. Christina Shanks
William Baillie and Margaret Downs had the following family, all in Shotts except for Mary, who was born in New Monkland:
Mary, b. 1813, m. Robert Wark in 1832, d. 1865
Margaret, b. 1815, d. 1831
Bethea, b. 1817, m. John Carswell in 1838, d. 1851
Janet, b. 1819, m. John Wark in 1838, d. 1886
Helen, b. 1821, d. aft 1861
William, b. 1823, m. Janet Gray in 1850, d. 1880
John, b. 1826, m. Jean Gagie iin 1863, d. aft 1901
Jane, b. 1828, m. John Munn in 1856, d. 1913
Agnes, b. 1830, m. James Shaw in 1855, d. aft 1861
Archibald Downs, b. 1833, m. Jane Giffen in 1860, d. 1883
James, b. 1835, d. aft 1851
Any additional information would be appreciated.

Did William Baillie born in New Monkland live beyond 1855? If not how did you verify his parents names?
-
HI,
Yes, William died in 1858 and I have his death entry which states his parents names. Do you have any interest in the Baillie name?
-
Hello achra,
I only have a distant interest in your Baillies. Are you aware of the John Baillie & Mary Hill branch? I think there may be a link between them and your William Baillie & Margaret Downs.
Your Janet Baillie (1819 - 1886) married John Wark (1816 - 1848). Their son Archibald Wark (1848 - 1871) can be found in the 1861 census as a 12 year old servant at Easter Whin Farm, Slamannan. The farmer is George Baillie, born 1803 in Shotts. He may have married Helen Auld in 1826 in Shotts. He had two children on the census records, Margaret Baillie (b 1827) and John Baillie (b 1830), but there is no wife recorded.
This George Baillie may be the son of John Baillie (1765 - ) & Mary Hill (1767 - 1852). They married in 1791 in New Monkland and had seven children, John (b 1792), Ludovic (b1794), James (b 1796), David (b1798), William (b 1800), George (b 1803) and Mary (b 1806), all born in Shotts.
John Baillie & Mary Hill are at Crook Farm in Shotts for the 1841 census and your William Baillie & Margaret Downs are at Crook Brough Over Bank End Farm in Shotts.
Perhaps these two Baillies, John and William, were brothers? That would make George Baillie and Janet Baillie first cousins.

Hi Leighton,
I didn't have the 1861 information on Archibald, son of Janet Baillie and John Wark, so thank you. I had come across the John Baillie/Mary Hill scenario living next door and wondered about the relationship, but without a birth it's hard to prove. I have it in my notes as set out below:
1841 - a possible brother? living in same place
Crook Shotts -Lanarkshire
ED 7 Folio: 7 Page: 2
John BAILLIE 75 Farmer b Lanarkshire
Mary HILL 70 b Lanarkshire
Mary B HILL 30 b Lanarkshire
John HILL 10 b Lanarkshire
George HILL 6 b Lanarkshire
and same family from Jim Bundy's notes on the Lanark List
Could this John be a brother or cousin of William?
1798 John Baillie Junior tenant in Crook and Mary Hill his lawful Spouse had a son Born there on the 15th July and Baptized by the Revd Ebenr Hislop and Named David Baillie.
The John living next door is too young to be William's father, as he married William's mother in 1762.
Any thoughts on this matter are most welcome.

Hello achra,
John Baillie & Mary Louden were married in 1762. It is quite possible that they had a son, John, born in 1765. In fact, there were probably several other children born before William in 1782. (Perhaps including the Baillie that I believe was born but cannot find).
In that 1841 census for John Baillie & Mary Hill you have shown, I believe it is mis-transcribed. I think that Mary B is Mary Baillie (1806 - 1853), their youngest child. Also John and George are John Baillie and George Baillie, the sons of George Baillie & Helen Auld. George & Helen had three children, not two as I wrote before.
The 1841 census for George Baillie has him in Torphichen with only his daughter Margaret.

I also have another Baillie living in Crook, a William Baillie, possibly a son of John Baillie and Mary Hill? The family names are right. He is in the 1841 census as follows:
Crook Shotts-Lanarkshire
ED 7 fo 7 p 5
William BAILLIE 40 Farmer b Lanarkshire
Margret BAILLIE 30 b Lanarkshire
John BAILLIE 5 b Lanarkshire
William BAILLIE 3 Lanarkshire
Mary BAILLIE 1 b Lanarkshire
John McKEY 15 Ag Lab not b Lanarkshire
Margret NEGHTN 15 Female Servant not b Lanarkshire
Page: 7/6
William PARK 12 Ag Lab not born Lanarkshire
I think I should check out John Baillie and Mary Hill more thoroughly. I will try to find John Baillie's death when I am in Scotland next year. I also have the following from Jim Bundy's notes:
1798 John Baillie Junior tenant in Crook and Mary Hill his lawful Spouse had a son Born there on the 15th July and Baptized by the Revd Ebenr Hislop and Named David Baillie.
From Jim Bundy's notes I have taken note of any mention of Baillie in Shotts, so I now need to try to connect the dots more precisely.

I descend from JOHN THOMSON and MARY INGLIS (or Ingles) through their daughter ELIZABETH (Bethia) THOMSON, who married GEORGE GARTSHORE. All I know about this couple comes from familysearch.org.
John Thomson married Mary Inglis in Apr 1763 (IGI M116514). They had the following children in New Monkland:
Andrew Thomson, b. 17 Mar 1765 (IC116514)
Elizabeth, or Bethia, Thomson, b. 13 Apr 1766 (C116514)
John Thomson, b. 21 May 1769 (C116514)
Jean Thomson, b. 21 May 1769 (C116514)
David, b. 22 Sep 1771 (C116514)
Mary Inglis was born on 30 Dec 1744 in New Monkland (C116512). She was the daughter of David Inglis and Betty Zuil or Yuill. I find a marriage record with just the name David Inglis in New Monkland on 12 Jul 1741.
Does anyone know more about this family?
Kathy

When and where did Bethia Thomson Gartshore die?
-
Hi Sancti,
She probably died in New Monkland. That is where she was married and where her children were born.
The last child was born there in 1811. Thank you for your interest.

Hi,
How do you know that John and William are brothers? I see the possibility but haven't found proof. I would love to have found that connection!
Thanks,
Achra

Hi Achra
John's parents on his death certificate in 1855 are given as Mary Loudon and John Baillie. William's parents on his death cert. in 1858 are also John Baillie and Mary Loudon. I have taken that as proof. Also William is living at Crook Brough in 1841 and John at Crook, both farms in Shotts Parish. Presumably they are neighbouring farms which suggests they could be related. I hope this helps.
