Is there anyone who might be able to check this out for me in Dalston PR's? I found the info tonight and am wondering if they are children of "my" Robert Akin and Anne Ruddick/Ruddock as they married in 1831. The timeline fits and does not overlap any others I already had which start in 1841.

We don't spell very well up here in the cold. Try Aikin on freebmd.org.uk for carlisle district and up to 1850 and quite a few come up. Haven't tried familysearch with this spelling but you may get lucky. bob

Hi there
Hi Bob
Try Aitken as well. Like Bob said spelling's often way off up here - for one thing, you can assume there's a chance that half of what's written wont be pronounced hence in a largely illiterate age it probably wasn't written half the time anyway!
Best wishes

PS Having said that, if you don't mind a little wait - laid off at the moment - I can look at the original (on film), for you.

Surely, it's those who came later who are spelling the early name incorrectly! ;D

Anyone who tries to write it from what's said without the benefit of the written word - still!
eg. "'t Moor" for Cleator Moor, "Mirus" for Mirehouse etc and not even consistent.
What hope for a poor innocent family historian?!?!?!!

Hmm
Totally off originl topic but a Whitehaven postman told me that they one had a letter
Mr Towsat
Toppethill
Arismore
Whitehaven
It was delivered (correctly).
For the non Cumbrians reading this The house at the top of the Hill, Harras Moor, Whitehaven. :) :)

Hi
Might be off topic on the face of it, but it goes a long way to explaining why it's so hard to pin down entries in this neck of the woods! Also, why some people can't believe how open they have to be to widely varying spelling even compared to the rest of the country!
Best wishes

Thank you all for the replies and ideas. Still trying to work them all out, I always accept lots of variations in spelling. If you ONLY stick to one, you'll miss alot of information for sure and I've known alot of people over the years that will only look for ONE spelling and won't even listen to any other information!
