Hello Everbody. This is my handsome grandfather.
You may have already performed restoration work on him and his family. He was the one on the couch in a “dress”. He passed away when I was only 5 years old. He bares a strong resemblance to his mother. The original photograph used to be in a large wooden frame that hung in my grandparent’s home. Around 1975 I had a new photograph done from the original to save it from fading away completely. I know the clothing doesn’t look that good but please see if you can restore it enough to be colourised. The photograph looks like someone has painted clothes below a head. Was that done back then? Perhaps it might be the degradation in the original photograph carried through into the later one?
My mum told me that he had lovely blue eyes.
It would be lovely to have him cleaned up & colourised. Regards, Ross. :)

Hi Ross :)
He's a handsome chap - a rival for my Grandad Harry, I think! You should make him your avatar, the Rootschat ladies will be swooning over him in no time ;D
In answer to your question about the painted clothes, yes, it was very commonly done as early enlargements (around the 1890/1920 period) were not very clear, so overdrawing or overpainting (either in black and white or colour) were done to bring out the details. Sometimes they were a bit "overdone" - I think in your grandfather's case they've gone a bit heavy on his waistcoat and jacket, but thankfully they've left his face mostly alone except for a bit of retouching about the eyes.
There does look to be some silvering out on his jacket, but whether that's from the original or the copy I can't tell.
Cheers

Hello Prue.
Thank you very much for your well informed response to my request.
My Grandpa Harvey, which is the name I use for him, was born in 1890 and this photograph could have been taken when he was about 18-21 years of age.
It is very nice to be able to ask someone like you about such things. I guess that proves that RC is well alive and doing what is was conceived to provide for its members.
Regards Ross. ;) :)
