I have just been able to confirm that James Elliott was born about 1840 in County Longford, Ireland and he was definitely a policeman - his father was Thomas Elliott. Now need to focus on County Longord but don't have any additional information ............. Alison

Do you have the 1861 marriage record? May give some more details to pinpoint birth areas. Also what church did James belong to?

AnnClare - have sent away for certificate but still waiting. Not sure of church but think Church of Ireland, but no clues for parish as yet ........... Alison

Was he in the RIC before moving to England. If so getting his RIC record May help to identify a birth/residence location.

Just received marriage certificate 29 January 1861 - no further clues - marriage church of Killucan, Westmeath, United churches of England and Ireland - another certificate says birth County Longford
Also received Victoria Police (Australia) file - no birth date but confirmed as Ireland - but does say that he was in London Police for 4 years 3 months and discharged 17 May 1867 - family came to Australia August 1867.
The document also says Ireland police 5 1/2 years - that suggests dates of 1858-1862(3)

If he served in the police in Ireland then it’s most likely that he served in the RIC (there was also the Dublin Metropolitan Police Force). Copies of RIC service records are held in various locations. One option is to order a copy from the PSNI Museum in Belfast.
Note that in the RIC you had to have served 7 years before you could marry, and that you would not normally be posted to a county where you or your spouse were born or had close family.

If he also served in London, then again there was more than one force but by far the biggest is the Metropolitan Force. I’d start with them

Looking at the RIC index for a likely James Elliott only turns up 2 neither of which are likely.
1.James Elliott age 19 on enlistment native county Longford enlisted 1854 Note says Emigrated to USA
2.James Elliott age 20 enlisted 1855 native county Fermanagh Note says Y for married and D for died 1864.
Nothing else showing for an enlistment c. 1857/8

If normal RIC procedures were followed, he had to have served 7 years before he could marry, nor could he join if married. Consequently he could not have enlisted in 1858 – 1862. A marriage in Jan 1861 would point to enlistment in 1853 or earlier. Jan 1854 at the latest.

There are some records on the irish FindMyPast site showing a James Elliott SC, which I assume means sub-constable. It says residence of Noughaval Littleton. I am assuming Noughaval is the parish on Westmeath/Longford boundary. Could be worth a thought.

Can you tell me what the Irish FindMyPast site is?
Just received today very brief information from Metropolitan Police and the records show he was born in Moydow, County Longford - which narrows down the search to a specific area in Longford. Unfortunately there is no birth date on the document
However it says he joined aged 26 years in January 1863 which suggests a birth year as 1837 although the 1861 marriage to Emily Fleeson in Killucan, Westmeath 1861 suggests a birth year as 1835 - marriage also says he was 26 years (but that was in 1861)
Any clues greatly appreciated, regards Alison - Australia

Hi,
The site is findmypast.ie , the irish leg of findmypast. It has the irish pettysessions and court registers so might be useful for tracking your James.
:)

The records for James Elliott in FindMyPast petty sessions Longford start from 1866 so can't relate to your James Elliott who was in the police in England by 1863. Could be a relative though!!

Added- What denomination was James? - Had a look at Rootisreland.ie (pay site but have free searches) for baptismal/birth record in Longford area and nothing showing -The existing R.C parish records for Ardagh & Moydow parish should cover his birth date - However if he belonged to the Church of Ireland (Anglican) those parish records do not seem to have survived the burning of the Four Courts in 1922.

Thanks for the info and suggestions - not sure of birth religion except to say that he married in Church of Ireland and their time in Australia was not in the Catholic church ........

Have now been told his Service No. maybe 43542 London Police and his date of birth might be 29 March 1843, Moydow, Longford, Ireland - haven't seen actual details so can't confirm
He was with London Police from 1863-1867 then to Australia
Before that he was with Police in Ireland for just over 5 years (RIC) 1858 - 1863 - I need his service number from the book behind the counter at Kew before being able to trace him further ...... Alison

Looks like a possibility however the birth date does not quite fit - the London Police information I was given (didn't sight a document) suggests a 1843 birth however it could be a typo and meant to be a 1834 and then that would fit with the information you found - where did you find the information? It provides a service number for the RIC 18404 It is so difficult sometimes with a common name, need other information to confirm the details - we think his father was Thomas
So I need to find a church record for the birth thanks for the details, every clue helps solve the mystery, regards ............. Alison

Had some DNA links to connections to Elliott in USA who were born in Ireland but no known details and no dates when they went to USA
Also found a probate for John Elliott late of Tonagh in County Westmeath - died 6 January 1864 (81 years) his widow was Mary (nee Kenney ??) his estimated birth abt 1783 registered Athlone Vol 3 page 20
So I am going to research the Tonagh Elliott family to see if I can find a connection to my James Elliott ......
