Title: Henry Leighton died in San Francisco 1879

I would like to obtain a death certificate for Henry Leighton who died in San Francisco on 21 March 1879 aged 40.

The only details i have about him are :-

His father`s name = Ward Leighton.

Born in USA 1839 (exact location not known)
Occupation - Merchant
Living in Shanghai, China in May 1864
Staying at the Grosvenor Hotel, London, England in Nov 1864
Married Gertrude Lyster in London on 2 Nov 1864
Living in Shanghai, China c1865
Living in Marylebone, London 1867 - 1869
Lived in Brighton, England April 1871
Lived in Cambridge-Place, Kensington-gate, London c1875
Divorced or separated c1874 -1875?
Residing at 330 Pine Street, San Francisco Dec 1878 & died there 21 Mar 1879.

Any other details about his occupation & cause of death at age 40 would be much appreciated.

He married Gertrude in St George, Hanover Square, London/Westminster - so the details arent in the LMA. Do you have the Certificate?

In 1871, he and Gertrude were with the Gordon family in Brighton. Henry is described 'Brother In Law'

Many thanks for your quick reply.  I do have the marriage certificate and have also checked through the various census records.

I found the notice of Henry Leighton`s death in the British Library newspaper website. The notice was in The Pall Mall Gazette 10 April 1879.

Pre 1906 records are not easy, but if there was a English newspaper mention then perhaps he will also turn up in CA newspapers with more info.

No luck yet with the San Francisco papers.  However i did find a reference to Henry Leighton in the Journal of the American Oriental Society which can be seen online on the JSTOR website.

Henry Leighton along with seven other merchants in Shanghai are recorded in May 1864 as being corporate members for life of the American Oriental Society.

Thanks Lisa for your very helpful link to Langley`s San Francisco street directories.

Henry Leighton only there a short time.  He might be connected to some of the other Leightons there too.
