Title: 1861 translation required!
Post by: JenniG on Sunday 08 May 05 22:19 BST (UK)
I've located Rebecca Cranfield in Little Thurlow on folio ref RG8/1125. Folio 20b  I believe she's the sister of my GGGM.  I can read her mother's name as Mary but I cannot make out the name of her father.  There were a Thomas and Mary living in the village having children about the time Rebecca was born, but I don't think it reads as that.  It looks most like Charles, but IGI doesn't find any matches.

I also can't read if he's a lawyer or a sawyer or the name of their house! :-[

Can anyone with more experience read it more easily, or does anyone have an 1841/51 reference which might make sense of it?

Also, I seem to recall seeing someone with a surname interest re Haylock on here.  I've found a marriage between Sara Hailock and John Cranfield in Thurlow in 1846 and wonder if he's the generation before Thomas/Charles/Cress or if there were more than one family in the area.  Any links?

Many thanks in anticipation.

I believe the father's name is "Chas" which is an abbreviation of Charles.  I cannot make out his occupation or the name of the house I'm afraid.  Perhaps others will have more luck.

My guess was "Overgreen" for the address, Sawyer for the occupation, but the name I could not make out.

In order to put the 1841 CD in the drive I had to remove the NBI, so had a quick look first:

13 Jun 1863 Mary CRANFIELD 82 Suffolk Little Thurlow, St Peter
20 Oct 1866 Thomas CRANFIELD 83 Suffolk Little Thurlow, St Peter
11 Dec 1899 Rebecca CRANFIELD 89 Suffolk Little Thurlow, St Peter

And the 1841 makes everything clear:
Little Thurlow HO107 / 1033 Folio 6 page 7
Over Green
Thomas CRANFIELD 58 sawyer Suffolk
Mary CRANFIELD 58 Suffolk
Rebecca CRANFIELD 25 Suffolk

Hope this helps,
Chris

Surname Interests Table:

HAYLOCK     sarah mackay (Cambridgeshire Ely);

I don't know if she's the only one, but Cambridgeshire and Suffolk aren't that far apart, and if Little Thurlow is anywhere near the county boundary, then .... ???

NBI = National Burial Index.  This is a collection of burials produced by the Federation of Family History Societies.  They sell the cds, and it can also be checked online - pay to view, on their website.

Thanks for that, everyone.  I couldn't get the surname interest table to work when I tried it the other day so I'll give it another go.
