This is a picture of the main street in Bacup and you can just see the public house called the Bulls Head Inn on the right. My great great grandfather was the landlord from 1870 to his death in 1880.
Would it please be possible to date this image ?
I would really appreciate any improvement to this photo.

Try www.bacuptimes.co.uk lots of info on pubs etc including the Bullshead , I like the man in the background leaning against the lamp post, it appears Bacup had a gas light and Coke company in 1834 although it is difficult to pinpoint the date street light first appeared, There certainly appears to be ample street lighting, my guess at a date would be 1890-5

Ah
Now I know which county it is ;D
Had I known before, I'd have searched for ref for the colours of the building but I seem to have guessed sort of OK .... kind of ;)
Just found this modern pic on flickr

As for the date of the original, there's not much to go on and all I can add is that the road surface looks rough and unmade, although it's difficult to see properly.
There are no cobbles and it doesn't look as if there's a concrete or tarmac surface.

Hello Rachel and James
Yes the man does look a bit like Charlie Chaplin and thank you very much for providing a date - it is much appreciated.
