Is everybody aware of the fantastic Name Index held by North Shields library.
Occurances of names in articles from around 1850 - 1950 are held on a card index. Not just BMD but obituaries and individual articles.
I have found the report of the death in a pub, a publican giving evidence at a murder trial and the report of a bankruptcy for various of my wife's ancestors as well as BMD events.
All are referenced to the date of publication and can be viewed on microfilm

Can you give me details of how to access this please?

Hi Wendy
The index is held in the Local Studies section of North Shields Library.
It is "hard copy" only, being stored in a large number of catalogue-card drawers in the Local Studies Section. You can access the index personally during normal opening hours. Full references are given to the Shields News and this available to be viewed on microfilm - staff are very helpful

Many thanks John.

They also have a huge 'Biograph' section with newspaper clippings sorted by surname.
Between the two I found lots of bits and pieces about Rossiters, the index was great for BMD announcements

Hi
I go regularly to North Shields Library, so if you have definite information on an ancestor living there, I could do a few look-ups of the Shields Daily News index for you.
The staff at the library are currently putting the info onto the library catalogue so hopefully, in the not too distant future, it may well be available online. Fingers crossed!!
Trini.
